Cold sores are part of the herpes simplex virus.
Typically cold sores are caused by herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1), but they can also be caused by herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV2).
Genital herpes is typically caused by HSV2, but they can also be caused by HSV1.
Cold sores and genital herpes are BOTH part of the herpes simplex virus. They are not "different viruses" (a lot of people seem to think they are). The only difference is HSV1 usually affects the mouth and lips and HSV2 usually affects the genital area. Sores caused by HSV2 also tend to be more severe and the outbreaks tend to last a little longer. Both HSV1 and 2 are spread the exact same way though and are both treated with the same medication. There is NO cure for herpes.

Yes it's a Herpes Virus. As you've learned there is no cure and they will reappear, occurance varies from one person to another. If you find you get them often, see your doctor. There are scripts that if taken on time will cut the effected time in half which is great!! Don't bother with the over the counter meds, they dont work, trust me they dont. A doctor can write you a script for either a creme or pill, some come generic, some don't. What ever it cost, it's definately worth every penny:) Good luck.

There is herpes simplex 1 (mouth) and 2 (genitals). I hope I haven't mixed up the numbers. They are a virus. They can be exchanged from mouth to genitals and the other way around. The symptoms and the length of the outbreak can be treated and reduced, but no cure.

DO NOT QUOTE ME HERE, BUT THE COLD SORE VARIETY OF HERPES IS CALLED SIMPLEX 1, WHERE THE GENITAL VARIETY IS SIMPLEX 2. NOW IT COULD BE THE OTHER WAY, BUT YES A COMMON COLD SORE IS A DIFFERENT FORM OF HERPES AND IT IS CURABLE.
