most often asthma gets worse in the night while sleeping .
i have had it all my life. make sure his room is very clean . if he has allergies then make his room mega clean and get an air purifier. . follow up with your doctor and ask to see a specialist if possible. also make sure he rinses his mouth very well after each puff of the inhalers thrush is awful .

sounds like you need to let the pediatrician know about the nighttime cough. you need to wake him up for a breathing treating with the nebulizer or give him the inhaler when this happens.
let him sleep on an extra pillow, make sure he drinks lots of water during the day, and keep a vaporizer by his bed at night. let him use Ocean nasal spray frequently during the day.
if he doesn't go already, ask for a referral to a peds pulmonologist. talk to your local American Lung Association for a local parents' group and other activities for your asthmatic child.

he can very well be just coughing but not wheezing, coughing is a natural reflex and if he has a cold he's going to cough---it's actually a good thing, he's clearing out whatever is irritating his airway and lungs. when he's sleeping all that mucus starts to settle because he's not really moving or taking deep breaths. as long as he's not wheezing, retracting, compaining of shortness of breath (you know the drill, I know you know cuz I'm a pedi nurse and a mom and I'm guessing you just need some reassurance:) he's ok. try a humidifier, dry air makes it worse. you know your son better than anyone and will know if he needs attention, hope he feels better!
