I'll be going to an authentic Japanese restaurant soon. The first time was a few weeks ago. I got a tranditional ramen soup with soy sauce: Shoyu Ramen.
Next time I want to branch out. Any suggestions?

try uni (sea urchin)! Unagi (eel) is really good, it's always cooked and topped with a sweet glaze.
Better yet, get the omakase onegaishimasu:
it's when you allow the sushi chef to design your meal, it's his choice. It's a culinary gamble but usually worth the risk.

I grew up in a Japanese home. We ate eel and I think I'm the only person in the world who doesn't like it. It tastes fishy to me. I love the salmon. You can usually choose it either as salted or as teriyaki. I prefer the salty. You can taste the flavor of the fish more. It's a shame to cover up the taste of salmon!
I also love curry. Japanese curry is different from Indian curry. It's more like a gravy with vegetables and usually beef or chicken. They also will serve tonkatsu (breaded and fried pork chop) on top of it. Yum!!!
Any of the soba is nice but sometimes depending on the restaurant, it will taste a lot like Chinese lo mein. Which is fine, but if you want to taste Japanese cuisine, it should taste a little different!
Sushi is good. If you're adventurous, go for any of the raw sushi. A good sushi chef can tell you what you will like on the basis of what you already like to eat. I know a sushi chef. His goal is to make sure you like it enough to come back and try it again.
If you like egg a donburi is good. But it's simple enough that most people could make it at home. Ask the waitstaff. Most restaurants know what their best dishes are.
If you want to taste the best teriyaki chicken or out of this world melt in your mouth sushi, try Hiroshi's on the Southside in Chattanooga, TN. I wouldn't have thought a small, southern city would have a great sushi bar, but it goes to show you that people love great food regardless of what kind it is.

Go for exotic sashami (raw seafood). My wife is Japanese and her favorite food is sushi and raw seafood, so I have to go by that.
Make sure you trust the restaurant, but try raw clams, octopus, squid, and various fish. It can be very interesting.
Another really good Japanese food is called taco yaki (literally means octopus balls). It basically is a fried dough ball with cabbage, ginger, onions and octopus. It is served with a brown sauce. Trust me, it's amazing.
And there are also Japanese pancakes. They usually have shrimp or pork in them and they also can have scallions, cabbage, ginger or other vegetables cooked in them. They are served with a brown sauce and mayonaise and sprinkled with seaweed. Again, they are great.
Good luck with your Japanese food. I'm sure you'll love whatever you try.

Try tonkatsu (pork cutlet with sweet source), agedashi (deep fried tofu in clear soy soup), and dashimaki (omelet). You'll love them!
