I have 2 bento boxes, with compartments arranged very much like this one:

I would like to use them for a japanese meal, no meat, poultry, fish, or seafood, but dairy and eggs are ok. No carrots. Do you have any suggestions? I need help to choose items that will all balance and work together. I definitely want to use a sweet tamagoyaki, but what else can be put with that?

I do enjoy fried tofu.

I would use the lower right compartment for your tamagoyaki, and use the sauce-cup for wasabi-soy. In the upper right, I'd have a simple cucumber salad with a peanut dressing, and maybe some cold tofu. In the upper middle, why not build up to the tamagoyaki with some tamago, which comes closer to sushi than a bland veggie roll would.

In the upper-left (as a palate cleanser) insert a small bowl of miso. For the main course, make a soba noodle dish (hot or cold) with egg and the fried tofu. The tofu and egg are consistent themes, while you get to hit on many of the major styles of japanese cooking.

In the first compartment, fried vegetarian rice with egg, green onions and leeks. Second compartment, soy beans. Third compartment, chopped sweet potatoes with ginger. Fourth compartment, Tofu Tempura. Little Compartment, condiment of your choice. Last compartment, tangerines.

Do you like Japanese food? If so, my mom makes me bento boxes and she puts in rice with sour plums or furikake on it in one compartment. For your other compartments put in some raw veggies with dip, maybe some sauteed spinich with soy sauce and bonito flakes, edamame, fruit.. have fun!

Cafe Japengo (San Diego)

The Vegetarian Bento box offers a stack of grilled peppers, mushrooms and zucchini in a spicy green sauce; a pile of cold soba noodles dressed in sesame oil and a hint of peanut; and a rice cake in a sweet soy sauce balanced by lightly bitter broccolini. And I loved the creamy-centered avocado sushi roll with curried dipping sauce.

I have personally eaten at Cafe Japengo many times & alot of my veg friends loved their veg bento box.
