my 13 month old son had a severe infection five weeks ago. i took him back to the drs because diabetes runs in my family he drinks 16oz of milk a day but also over a pint of juice/water. He never seems to be full up always looking for food but since he was in hospital although he is eating 2 dinners he is not really gaining weight he gets very tired quickly and cranky. All my dr said was keep an eye on him and bring him back in a week if you are still worried

I took my son to the Dr. for the same thing around the same age, He told me that if a young child is a diabetic they would be vomiting alot, which makes sence if you think about it, that would be a shock to their little system. My son used to drink that much and eat everything in sight, now he is 21 months old and everything has evened off. Good luck to you!

In my opinion, if there is a family history if Type 1 diabetes, and the child is displaying any symptoms, there are more reasons to check for diabetes than not to screen for it.

Yes, of course his symptoms may be related to his infection, age, or growth, but perhaps they are not. Sadly, Type 1 often goes undiagnosed in the very young since doctors often have this attitude towards screening. They often present in a coma, after showing signs for quite some time. It is also possible that the previous infection has now triggered Type 1 diabetes. We know this is very common in those who are genetically at risk for it.

Many very young children that develop Type 1 develop it suddenly or very quickly after a bacterial or viral infection.

It is very easy to check for Type 1 diabetes, and there is no reason it cannot be done. You can even check for urine glucose on your own by squeezing out his diaper and using a urine glucose/ketone dipstick. While not the most accurate method, anything clearly abnormal should show up.

I would follow up with the doctor ASAP if his symptoms continue. Put your mind at ease and also make sure your son is ok.

Exactly. This behavior is not at all unusual in children of that age. It is unlikely to have anything to do with the infection he had five weeks ago. Young children are not uniform in their growth rates, but you can be sure when they're growing fast - and at that age they do - they're going to eat and drink differently than they did earlier. Just do as the doctor says; it's likely the child is perfectly okay. And if you think he's eating like mad now -wait until he becomes a teenager!

he could just be getting over the stress of the previous infection. It isn't that the doctor isn't listening to you, it's that the symptoms you are expressing are too non-specific. Listen to what the doctor said, and if you still feel the child is abnormally hungry or thirsty, take him back in a week, but I will warn you now, at thirteen months, my kids ate and drank everything in sight and wanted more, no diabetes in my family, and they are fine and healthy now.

Get a second opinion. Ask your doctor for a referral and if she won't listen go to a walk in clinic or a pay visit to another doctor. It could be nothing, but if it's something you'll know you didn't just let it go.
