To truly treat a pnemonia the doctor needs some sputum from her lungs to culture it and see what the bug is succeptable to. They cannot just prescirbe one antibiotic as a guessing game that it would kill the bug.

Also you have to consider is it viral? if so then no antibiotic will kill it.

Only bacterial pneumonia can be treated with antibiotics. Viral pneumonia cannot. That being said, most bacterial pneumonia is treated with azithromycin, clarithromycin, and the fluoroquinolones as opposed to amoxicyllin due to an over abundance of amoxy-resistent bacterial strands. If the pneumonia is really bad they may IV you with vancomycin.

In certain cases of viral pneumonia antibiotics are administered to combat potential infections caused by the virus's presence.

I had pneumonia once and they put me on Levaquin....they say it treats a wide range of infections. I done well with it but she should call her doctor or her pharmacy to see if she can take it. Hope she gets better soon....It took me a long time to get my strength back but after I got over the illness I done fine.
