They are cartilaginous in order to prevent collapse of the airway under high pressure. The fact that they are incomplete in the posterior region allows expansion of each ring to a degree beyond what its normal structure allows, in order to accomodate greater inspiratory intensity (e.g. during exercise, etc).

yes it is a protective mechanism for the airway so that it does not collapse easily. Another example of the body having a protective barrier are your ribs. Your ribs serve as a barrier to protect vital organs in your body (heart and lungs) from trauma.
