Unless you have a very unhealthy diet now, it would be very difficult to be an unhealthy vegetarian. Make sure you are getting a nice balance of whole grains, fruits, vegetables and legumes. Get some soy in that house, yum.

here are some tips from the veg society, including a chart for a healthy balance http://www.vegsoc.org/newveg/fft/index.html

Vitamins are fine, but do NOT take supplements unless you are required to do so. Many people here like to tell people to take Iron supplements but, a.) Most vegetarian sources of Iron are better than most animal sources, and, b.) you can get Iron poisoning if you take more than you need.
But vegetarians and meat-eaters alike could use vitamins because most of us are not getting enough veggies.
:)

Here is a link where I collected some cool information. Click on the Iron and Protein facts if you would like to see vegetarian sources for these. http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-GXLd3H0hc6klMFe3HeGqSDn7SVlgijZ53gHnrrlGNoFgNut5?list=1

For B12, get yourself some fortified cereal or some nutritional yeast. Those will give you all you need.

Above all else: eat a variety if you want to be healthy. Same as any other diet. Meet is no miracle food.

There are no strict instructions i can give you on 'how to be come a vegatarian safely'. First, i must congratulate you on having decided to go vegy. I did a few months ago, and i feel like a whole new person. Eating meat just wasnt me...

Just make sure that you are eating enough, and that you replace the meat, protein and iron in your diet with something else.
You can use quorn instead of meat in almost any recipe, or vegetables. Make sure you get protein through nuts,
seeds,
eggs,
cheese
and baked beans,
and iron through
green vegetables
tomatoes
It easy easy from there-just eat enough, and eat healthily, like you already should! good luck, i hope that helps.
ps if you get any 'withdrawal' symptoms, go to your local health food shop where you should find protein, etc supplements.

Whats not safe about being vegetarian? Meat has all sorts of nasty chemical compounds, hormones, etc. Meat has to be cooked to a certain temperature to "kill" harmful bacteria and parasites. If you eat it cooked, you are also taking in the DEAD bacteria and parasites. Veggies get a quick rinse and are safe to eat raw. Simple common sense. If you eliminate meat, its easy to get protein from beans and legumes, and whole grains such as quinoa. I healed myself from a 12 year crippling illness by giving up meat.

Since you're planning to become a vegetarian it is likewise you must take in Vitamin B12 supplements because these are obtained from meat products. You must have a lot of grains and beans especially soybeans since they have good source of fiber, proteins, good fats, and some legumes. Green leafy veggies help in a lot of ways and make you fuller, buut whole grains as well. You need your Vitamic C, green leafy veggies and fruits that have them. limit your self on those junkies even if you know like Jell-O is vegetarian has horse parts in there. Milk helps, but if you're lactose-intolerant stick with leafy greens as well especially like brocolli has good source of calcium.

you just have to eat balanced so that you get all your nutritional requirements..some people supplement with vitamins..I have been a vegan 25 years , take no vitamins and am quite healthy ...for breakfast eat cereals, oatmeal, farina ,fruit,...lunch there are plenty of vegetarian meats to make sandwiches from, or peanut butter jelly , unchicken salads , unliver pate's ,veggie burgers , veggie dogs, have a salad , fruit , burrito, veggie taco, veggie wrap..for dinner have sauteed veggies, rice dishes, potatoes a hundred ways, veggie sausage and peppers, veggie dogs and beans, steamed vegetables, soups galore, pasta dishes so many ways as with beans, or peas, or broccoli, or just sauce , garlic and oil..there are Indian curry dishes , eggplant with sauce...I like to include all groups when I am eating..if I have protein, then I also have carbs,fruit,veggies..look at cookbooks and substitute..have fun with it...I Love food and eat very well , but am not fat at all ...I do eat a small amount of junk food but also like healthy snacks nuts and vegan bars...soy ice creams..the key is be aware of what you are eating and balance your meals ...
