A pulmonologist specializes in the lungs. Your son might need to see an Ear Nose and Throat specialist first, though, to rule out all allergies.

Some symptoms of asthma:
shortness of breath
wheezing
trouble breathing with activity
gasping for air
feeling like your throat or chest is tight

Check out www.webmd.com for more information, or google it. Good luck!

Pulmonologists specialize in lungs and breathing disorders. You may also want to take him to see an allergist, since childhood asthma is often caused by allergies.

To verify his symptoms, you should get yourself a stethoscope. If he seems uncomfortable or is having difficulty breathing, listen to his back and upper chest. You should only hear the sound of breathing if he is ok. If he has asthma, you will hear either a rattling sound or a sound like what you hear when you breathe in while constricting your own throat (this is wheezing). That will be the classic sign of asthma. A frequent dry hacking cough is another sign that he is having trouble breathing.

Generally, for children that small, once asthma is identified, they can give you medication in the form of a nebulizer or a liquid. A nebulizer will create a vapor of the medication and be admisistered almost like a jet-fighter mask.

Watch out, as well. Medical health professionals don't know much about asthma as of yet. They tend to try to hand out steroid based medications as soon as asthma is identified. Steroids are not good for young children, and can cause plenty of side effects through continual use... including serious mood disorders. There are a good number of asthma patients that have been placed on steroids permanently that are now taking meds. for bipolar and anxiety disorders.

However, asthma is becoming more and more common.... and childhood asthma, quickly identified, can often be completely controlled. The children lead perfectly normal lives, as long as they are kept away from their trigger - the environmental factor that will cause the asthma attacks. Your son should be fine! Keep going and make sure that he gets all the medical help he needs.

Pulmonologists. I took my son to an allergy specialist and he actually diagnosed my son with asthma at 2years old. Asthma manifests itself in many ways. Its not all just wheezing. My son had a persistant cough and threw up a foamy phelgm substance for what seemed like months. Get a second opinion, you dont have to go with only your pediatricians opinion. Sometimes doctors just dont know the answer. Thats why they say doctors are trained in the "practice" of medicine, because they are doing trial and errors to figure out what will make you better.

actually with him being so young and not having a attack there not much they can do. My daughter dr thinks she has it but he says with her being so young he doesn't want to give her anything till she older he give a medicine for her but he says not to give her to her unless her bronchitis is acting up or she having trouble breathing. If you feel like your Dr not listening then ask for a second o pion. Good luck
