" The medical name for the specific virus that causes cold sores is herpes simplex.

There are two types of herpes simplex infection: herpes simplex virus one (called HSV-1 for short) and herpes simplex virus two (called HSV-2 for short). Although both can cause cold sores around a person's mouth, most are caused by HSV-1."

HSV-1 is cold sores or sores on the mouth.
HSV-2 usually causes genital herpes but can show up on the mouth.

If a person with HSV-1 or 2 sores on their mouth has oral sex it is likely that they can give to the person receiving, genital herpes. It is the other way around as well. Person receiving can give the person giving oral cold sores.
A person with herpes can also have the sores on their mouth. In other words it is hard to tell which strand someone has either way, if you don't want even HSV-1 then don't drink after, eat after or kiss anyone where there is a sore... OPEN OR NOT. It is all inter linked and safer to wait for the persons sore to completely heal before kissing etc. don't have sex or give oral sex to someone who has it on their genitals without a condom or.. well... just don't until they are healed!

If someone has coldsores (herpes simplex 1) and gives someone else oral sex the recieving person could get genital herpes (herpes simplex 2) from the person with the cold sore.
