ECG or EKG is a test that measures the electrical activity of the heartbeat. With each beat, an electrical impulse travels through the heart. This impulse causes the muscle to squeeze and pump blood from the heart. It gives two major kinds of information. First, by measuring time intervals on the ECG, a doctor can determine how long the electrical wave takes to pass through the heart. Finding out how long a wave takes to travel from one part of the heart to the next shows if the electrical activity is normal or slow, fast or irregular. Second, by measuring the amount of electrical activity passing through the heart muscle, a pediatric cardiologist may be able to find out if parts of the heart are too large or are overworked.

An ECG, or Electro-Cardio-Graph is a way for the Medical staff to monitor your heart rhythm and to record it on paper. Those little round sticker things that were placed on your chest allow the electrical currents in your heart { yes, your heart is in part an electric pump} to be detected and recorded. For every action your heart takes, whether "pumping", or "re-filling" or "still" for a moment is shown by a distinctive and recognizable shape on the monitor screen and paper. All Docs, Nurses, and Medics are very familiar with normal and problematic heart rhythms There is, in fact, a protocol known as ACLS, Advanced Cardiac Life Support , which basically puts "all Docs, Nurses, and Medics on the same page", despite where you work or live....basically. I hope I helped. Ask the Doc to see your ECG, and have him show you what the differnt shapes mean. It's cool.

I read through the other answers and there seems to be one missing :
The other main piece of information that an EKG will provide is the MANNER that electricity is moving through the heart. This is particularly important when there is injury (like during a heart attack, for instance) that will causes changes in the WAY the electricity is moving through the heart and therefore demonstrate characteristic injury patterns for a variety of problems. These patterns can be indentified early and give medical people an early indication about what might be the problem - so that it can be addressed early.

THIS IS A GEART MONITOR...IT measures the rythm of your heart.
It will tell the doctor when your heart is put under any kind of stress.
IT doesnt check BP only the rate of the heart beats
