My husband is 30 years old and just had a physical and the doctor said his glucose was a bit high at 206 and will do another blood test in 6 months. What should we know about this, is this a precursor for diabetes. He's very healthy (at least we thought before this test), works out alot, eats a vegetarian diet. How concerned should we be?

Be concerned enough to act.

First, find a competent doctor or endocrinologist and get full diagnostic testing done. I say full testing, because at his age and apparent fitness, he may be one of the more obscure types such as MODY or LADA. See the last two urls's.

If the 206 was a valid test, then he should have been re-tested by the doctor as a matter of course. Read the first source url on diagnosis levels:

"The ADA recommendations for diagnosing diabetes state that patients should be told they have diabetes if any of the criteria below applies:

* Fasting plasma glucose is equal to or greater than 126 mg/dl;
* Diabetes symptoms exist and casual plasma glucose is equal to or above 200 mg/dl; or
* Plasma glucose is equal to or greater than 200 mg/dl during an oral glucose tolerance test. "

Vegetarian diets are much more difficult to manage as a diabetic because of the higher carbohydrate content. Not impossible, but difficult.

A random blood glucose level of greater than 200 is a concern. What you and your husband need to look out for are the 3 polys: polydipsia (excessive thirst), polyuria (excessive urination) and polyphagia (excessive hunger). If you have these 3 symptoms along with a random BG (blood glucose) of over 200 that is considered diabetes. The other criteria are 1) a fasting BG of >126 ro 2) a BG of over 160 after a special glucose tolerance test your doctor can run.
BTW, diet and exercise are first line therapy for diabetes management, so keep that up as best you can and good luck.

Yes Glucose levels high are bad. Really high uncontrolled you can go into whats called a Hypoglycemic Coma. If his sugar is over 77-90 on an empty stomach no eating for a few hours, you have a problem. If it runs in the family he might have diabetes go to his primary physican.

I'm sorry but your husband already has diabetes.
Go to an endocrinologist asap. Forget that old stupid doctor.
206 is about 100 points too hi,not just a bit hi.
Make appointments to visit a dietitian and sign up for diabetes ed classes.
Read everything you can about diabetes that was written in the past five years.
An endocrinologist is the way to go.
I promise.

A vegetarian diet is good, but he should also incoroprate some carbohydrates into his meal in order to keep his sugar from plummetting into the higher numbers. 206 is high and this needs to be controlled. Watch your serving sizes and the times that you eat. Diabetics generally eat 45-60grams of carbohydrates per meal and they take medication and exercise. You can visit the ADA--American Diabetes Association website and look under Pre-Diabetes and read this and this should give you more helpful information. Or you can type in Pre-Diabetes and get plenty of information.
Hope this helps you.

Be sure to fast 12 hours before the test. A sip of water to take a pill is okay. Over 126 is a sign of diabetes. 106 is good.

206 is too high to wait 6 months. See an Endocrinologist/Diabetic specialist as soon as possible. It seems to me that your Dr. doesn't know enough about diabetes to treat it effectively.

206 isn't a bit high, it's high.

Bypass your doctor & go see a specialist. Now.

I'm not being alarmist. It's better to get treatment now & prevent long term problems than to wait 6 months & have them on the way.
