Yes. HIV/AIDS is considered a STD (sexually transmitted disease).
You CAN get HIV other ways though, like sharing syringes and needles or even childbirth, but, most people who have HIV/AIDS have contracted it by sex.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk. The three major routes of transmission are unprotected sexual intercourse, contaminated needles, and transmission from an infected mother to her baby at birth, or through breast milk.
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a collection of symptoms and infections resulting from the specific damage to the immune system caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The late stage of the condition leaves individuals prone to opportunistic infections and tumors. Although treatments for AIDS and HIV exist to slow the virus's progression, there is no known cure.
Also, a person can not contract AIDS, they can ONLY contract HIV from an HIV+ or AIDS+ person. AIDS is later developed from HIV.

well to answer your question doctors consider hiv and aides and std but you can get it from a million things such as used needles you can get from someone leaving enough blood on a toilet and you have a cut yes this is unlikely but it does happen the difference between aids and hiv is that hiv is just a virus that slowly breaks down the immune system and keeps going on if you dont get the proper medical help aids is when it is fully blown out and that is when you see people looking like walking zombies and they look so sick. but you can go from having full blown out aides back to just having the hiv virus if you are on the medication if you have question you can google ONE it is an organization that helps ppl with aids and hiv understand the reason i refer them is bc when someone close to me found out they had hiv we had to think y and it was bc the did mouth to mouth resesitation to save a dying man on the high way and they passed it on to him and now i will be with out a father but like i said you can be healthy and have it. and as far as how long does it take untill ppl die from it it could be months days or years i have known some who has had it for 25 yrs and is in perfect health hope this helps

An std is a sexually transmitted disease. Period. Any kind. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, HIV, etc.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a condition in humans in which the immune system begins to fail, leading to life-threatening opportunistic infections.
Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk. Within these bodily fluids, HIV is present as both free virus particles and virus within infected immune cells. The three major routes of transmission are unprotected sexual intercourse, contaminated needles, and transmission from an infected mother to her baby at birth, or through breast milk. Screening of blood products for HIV in the developed world has largely eliminated transmission through blood transfusions or infected blood products in these countries.
Asking how long it takes to die is not an answerable question. It depends on the individual. Do they care for themselves? Take their life prolonging meds?
A lot of times, people die from other conditions that their immune system can not fight off when they have HIV or AIDS. Such as pnemonia.
