Are you quoting your granddaughter's pediatrician when you say "restricted" airway disease? If the physician is correct in their assessment, then asthma is "not" what she has. Asthma is actually an obstructive disorder. Or, your granddaughter's physician may have meant to say 'obstructive', but got his/her terms incorrect (which is not uncommon).

Restrictive disorders include Fibrosis (scarring), Sarcoidosis (immune disorder), Alveolar Damage (air sac damage), Pleural effusion (fluid 'around' the lung in the pleural space), Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (air sac inflammation), Asbestosis (doubt she was exposed to asbestos), Pleurisy (Pleural Inflammation).

All of these restrictive disorders limit the expansion of lungs, and thus limit volume (therefore restrictive). Obstructive disorders are usually "within" the lung and impede "flow" of air as opposed to volume of air with restrictive disorders. That is why the severity of asthma is objectively measured with a "Peak Flow" Meter.

Perhaps ask your granddaughter's physician to be more precise, as restrictive disorder is a bit too general to figure out the specific problem. If your granddaughter was born premature, she may have a good host of restrictive and obstructive disorders from being a preemie.

Feel free to update your info, we'll follow up.
Good luck.

As you have not mentioned any other associated symptoms what you are referring is a condition told to be The precursor of Asthma in kids.

asthma is a condition in which the airways of the lungs become either narrowed or completely blocked, impeding normal breathing.

restricted airway disease - the term is used only in US i think -
As ur grand child is 3 yrs of age and u have not mentioned that she has any other problem like diseases with effect muscle tone. Only possible and most common is asthma or bronchits.

Restricted airway diseases means that your granddaughter can hardly get oxigenation in her airways..this issure may decrease are po2 and also her oxygen saturation. You can always advice her to perform purse lipped breathing to open up her alveoli by generating back pressure.
