a PFT as it is called, will diagnose asthma and any other type of breathing problem that may be occurring-- it consists of you breathing into a tube which is connected to a computer that monitors the velocity of your breath-- they do them with medications also- and you will repeat the same tests before and after the breathing treatments....you may be asked to walk the halls as they monitor you and then continue with the test........

With a pulmonary function test- a person takes a deep breath and blows into a tube which is hooked up to a computer. The computer measures how much air comes out of the lungs over certain periods of time including 1 second and 3 seconds . From these measurements, the computer calculates percentages, and also forms a graph of the breath . Pulmonary function tests can help determine if a person has asthma (< 80% of the breath comes out in the 1st second), but can also help diagnosis other lung diseases such as COPD and restrictive lung diseases. Hope this helps

A pulmonary function test is a series of tests that can figure flows, volumes, pressures and on going disease processes in the lungs.

A full test takes about an hour to do. It can tell if a patient has an obstructive disease or restrictive disease.
