Last night I went out to celebrate a friends birthday and had quite a bit to drink (vodka/cranberry & beer). This is NOT something I do often. But today my blood sugar level spiked to 175, and I feel VERY out of sorts, tired & jittery. I've been diabetic for about 5 years, (30 yrs old). I keep my sugar level steady between 101 (before meals) and 140ish (after meals) with medication (not insulin). Is this normal?
I know that alcohol significantly raised blood sugar, but the last time a went out to have "celebrate" was about 9 months or so ago, and I don't remember such a spike or feeling so "off".
Thanks for sharing!

Actually there's some question as to whether alcohol significantly raises blood sugar. The sugar in the cranberry juice certainly does, and is something you should probably eliminate from your diet entirely.
Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution: The Complete Guide to Achieving Normal Blood Sugars is a book that comes highly recommended and may help you not progress to the next phase of diabetes.
Also, check out Dr. Mercola's site and Life Extension Foundation for info on diet and diabetes.
Good luck!

I am writing to tell you what an incredible impact these methods had on my life! I have had type 2 diabetes for 27 years. For me, the worst part of this horrible disease is the severe pain I constantly get in my feet. The pain is so bad that I avoid standing and walking as much as possible. I've got to tell you that within the first month, my feet stopped hurting altogether and I can now walk totally pain free.
Believe it or not, I even danced at my niece's wedding last month, something I have not done in a many years. I've been following the book for six months now and my blood sugar is well within normal range. I feel great!
I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

The sugar in the cranberry and the carbs in the beer caused the spike in your blood sugar. If you didn't eat a high protein snack to help cover all of this when you got home then that would explain your feeling like you did today. Remember you need that HS snack to help your blood sugar stay level during the night.

Yes, there's lots of carbs in beer and lots of sugar in cranberry. You're spike is normal, and I'm sure you'll come back down relatively soon. It happens sometimes. If you're not used to running that high, then physically you will feel very different. It will go away when your sugar comes back down.

excercise would have taken the sugar down. Meds don't really replace the insulin fast enough for all the carbs you had.
They only stimulate the pancreas to make insulin, not replace it. Walk it off.

I'm no expert and I don't drink but I think I know the answer to your question. The older we get the more our body wears down and changes. It may have only been 9 months ago that you went out but your body is getting older, so be ware.

First you shouldn't be drinking. The "spike" was caused by it. It's gong to get to the point where one drink is going to cause you to spike.
