I lived in us for a year, and lost about 1 1/2 stone cos I hated the food. I was living with an american family, so I'm sure I could have eaten better had I had more control over what I ate, but they only really ate junk, and I got sick of it, I craved fruit and veg- I used to keep frozen peas in the freezer and just eat them in bowlfulls. At one point I lived on a bagel a day- the bagels were better than your average english bagel!
Everyone can eat well though if they make the right decisions, were you live is not really relavent

I think we eat unhealthily in the United States for many reasons. But one of the things about this country is we never mind stealing the best things from everyone else. Most families I know rarely eat hamburgers and hot dogs. We eat Chinese, Thai, Mediterranean, Italian, Mexican--something different each night. And most grocery stores stock organic food and lots of fresh veggies and fruits, so the opportunities for delicious, healthy eating are plentiful. We like to experiment and don't get stuck in a grind such as heavy meat pie this, and heavy meat pie that--- with tea of course. :) By the way, I've seen lots of fat brits on the BBC news on PBS lately. You guys need to lay off the Mickey D's!

ANY food cooked well can be nice and ANY food cooked badly tastes disgusting.
As an English girl I love the traditional British dishes of Roast Dinner or curry from the local Indian.
But, I also love hamburgers, Pad Thai, Beef in Oyster Sauce with noodles and chicken chassuer. Did I forget pizza?
The modern British diet isn't really British anymore and thank God for it because it makes life more interesting.
We shouldn't be too smug about out diet any way. I think we're the most obese nation in Europe!

In the US it's quantity over quality. The British meals you quoted are OK but not representative. How about roast beef and Yorkshire pud, roast leg of lamb with mint sauce, roast pork with crackling? And of course, the US has pumpkin pie, clam chowder, and - sorry, all I can think of at the moment.

Seriously though, the USA has the advantage of a multi cultural background and a multi-cultural cuisine. More should be made of this in the UK. We have a rich cultural tradition - it doesn't stop at chicken tikka and a döner kebab.

Well, for one thing Americans didn't produce MAD COW DISEASE. Talk about unsavory things to eat will you?! Some of American population may be fat. But at least we're not jerking around with some tweeky neurological disorder from eating British meat! There are plenty of fat brits to go around, if not just from all the grease in the fish 'n' chips.

We have better variety of food (and healthier Beef) than Jellied Eels 'n' mash 'n' liquor 'n' mud bog pie. And we think it's really funny when brits fret about how they invented Curry, and didn't! Your population of Indians and Chinese thinks it's funny too! I hear their relatives laughing in India and China as well. Ha Ha, those silly brits. Next they'll insist they invented Fish and potato fries. Have another scoop of eel jelly and wash it all down with a nice hot cup of SHUT THE F**K UP ALREADY!

I'm a first generation Yank whose whole family is from London. I grew up eating traditional English foods made from scratch with high quality fresh ingredients, and I've always loved the food. I think the big difference must be the freshness and quality because all my friends absolutely love my cooking.

As for people being fat, no one is holding a gun to anyone's head and forcing them to be fat. LOL. If you eat fast food all the time, never cook, and don't excersise, then of course you will be fat. If you eat good food you cook yourself, and go to the gym regular, you won't be. *shrugs*

The obesity rate in the UK is higher than the US. We don't eat out vegetables 'mushy'. Most of our traditional dishes aren't deep fried. A lot of Americans eat crap, but in if you take traditional American cooking and traditional English cooking, there is no comparison, come on. Anyone who has traveled knows... American all the way
