about the sources of vitamins in "enriched" products, such as rice, wheat (flour) cereals, pasta, etc? Due to allergies, I have been researching vitamins, and have found that many are derived from animal sources. I spoke with several major manufacturers that confirmed this. Does anyone have information on this? I have found loads of conflicting information, but so far the answer points to yes, enriched products contain animal derivatives. So many common foods are "enriched" or contain ingredients that are enriched, such as processed foods and I am super curious about this. I appreciate any info

In order ot answer your question I think it is best to know what enriched and fortified means ...What Does Enriched Mean?

Enriched means that vitamins or minerals have been added to the food. The vitamins and minerals are added to replace the original vitamins and minerals that were lost during the refining process. For example, if the food originally had iron, but the iron was lost during the refining process, the food will be 'enriched' to add the iron back into the food.
People often think enriched means 'added vitamins and minerals'. This assumption is incorrect. Enriched merely means to replace what was lost during the refining process.

What Does Fortified Mean?

Fortified means that vitamins or minerals have been added to the food in addition to the levels that were originally found before the food was refined. When foods are fortified, they will have more vitamins and minerals after they are refined than they did before they are refined. Common fortified foods are: milk (fortified with vitamin D) and salt (fortified with iodine).
You need to know then what the food in enriched with, which specifc vitamins and minerals.....if it is enriched with vitamin C , you are fine..if it is enriched with B (especially b12) you will need to question this and what the product is ..soy milks that are enriched use vegan enrichments...they drive there b12 from the soy itself and soil...so it is not black and white.Like most products and labels you read you will have to know a lot of information to come to a proper understanding ....also many vitamins are vegan but the shell is from gelatin..so beware there as well...

Yes many products are made from animals. There is even some crackers that contain lard an animal product! It's always best to write the manufacturer of the company of a product if U want to know about the product! Most companies do tell U the truth if U take the time to ask! Some products have soap in them Cheerios for example contains Trisodium phosphate (listed as Preservative) a nonsudsing compound often used in cleaners and products like jet dry! I don't buy Cheerios anymore! Robin Hoods Flour and Red Rose Flour they both claim they use no animals or animal products in the making of their flour! They say they have a closely guarded secret process!

As to the vegan wine issue - typically animal products are not added to the wines, but rather used in the processing of them. For example, egg whites may be introduced and then removed to attract certain impurities in the wine, or a filter from an animal product may be used to filter the wine, thus making the wine not vegan, and although still vegetarian, there is a small chance that minute particles of animal products may be contaminating the wine.
