Social-
Diabetics need to be on the constant look out for their blood sugar levels. So, while many social situations involve drinking and eat high carb/high sugar things, for a diabetic this can be suicide. Literally. Many diabetics will need to avoid such situations if they do not have a lot of willpower.
Also, a lot of diabetics don't look out for themselves and can end up going into diabetic shock or coma, while even on an outing. It's not something that is going to happen every time, but such an occurence CAN happen if the diabetic has NOT been taking good care of themselves. Plus, disorientation and odd behaviors in someone who has extremely high or low blood sugar can cause friends to start avoiding social time with the diabetic.
If the person is taking care of themselves, then it's just a matter of avoiding the foods/drinks that can harm them. This will cause MUCH LESS social problems than the person who isn't taking care of themselves.
Finacial-
If you don't have good insurance, insulin and other diabetic supplies can be very expensive. Luckily most supplies are covered by federal law and can be delivered to your door.
There are also other medications to consider. Diabetes can contribute to heart disease, high blood pressure, and eye problems, to name a few. If any of these health issues are a concern, then the medications would also have to be figured into cost.
All in all, diabetes can be very expensive, socially and medically. It doesn't have to be if the diabetic in question takes good care of themselves and follows a strict regimen.

Social: My son's friends all know he is diabetic, and they tend to eat what he is allowed and at his schedule...but that is what makes them friends. He does have highs and lows, therefore he also has mood swings...which can sometimes lead to embarrassing moments socially. Most of the kids at his high school also know he is diabetic (last year he had a seizure during class) and they all respect his privacy as far as that goes. I think if he weren't such a good looking kid, he might have more social problems but he happens to be a shaggy blonde haired, blue eyed teenager who is not hard on the eyes...so it makes it easier for him. (As far as that ignorant first answer goes, I personally would like to know where she got her information because to be honest she is blowing out of a hole that isn't her mouth. It makes me SICK to have people talk about things in which they have absolutely no correct information. Diabetics can lose friends easily simply by having a lousy attitude or being a plain and simple a**hole but that has NOTHING to do with the disease. I happen to know several a**holes who aren't diabetic.)
As far as financial, if it were not for insurance both public and private, we would be bankrupt. Just having him diagnosed cost us $72,000 +. He and my husband both have diabetes and the cost before insurance a month is $2800.

Social life is not affected. What is affected is if you want to get life insurance - that will be most difficult (diabetes shortens your lifespan). Economics will also be affected (depending on your health insurance) because cost of medication goes through the roof.

Forget anything you have ever been told about Diabetes.
And get this - it has nothing to do with insulin, exercise, diet or anything else you've heard in the past. It's all based on latest breakthrough research that Big Pharma is going Stir Crazy to hide from you.
