Stress tests can detect Heart defects, it measures the effects of strenuous activity on the heart. It can also determine if their are problems with plaque buildup in the blood vessels leading to the brain, lungs, etc which can show the early signs of stroke, or heart attack or many other defects that may exist in the heart itself. I've had one of these done every year for the last 5 years.

During a stress test they will be looking at your heart to see how it reacts to stress. That way they can see the level that it functions at and if there are any problems with blockage. If problems are discovered there is a good chance that medicine will help or in some cases angioplasty or stint might need to be suggested. This is when they unclog a blocked artery. My mother has had many, many stress tests with no complications. In fact they have allowed her to live much longer than originally thought possible because the doctors could begin treating a specific problem. Good luck!

As mentioned above, the stress test is a diagnostic procedure to monitor heart function under "stress". You will have 6 EKG leads attached to your body in key areas. Then you will be asked to walk on a treadmill. There are two systems for measuring your cardiac function, The BRUCE SCALE measured in METS and the DUKE SCALE. The treadmill will gradually speed up and the incline increased. Your heart rate and blood pressure will be monitored. Any signs of coronary artery disease or other cardiac anomalies will show up. The cardiologist will observe the EKG waveshape and ask if you have any chest pain. The stress test is used used inconjunction with Nuclear Med Heart function tests ( MYOVIEW ) and echocardiograms (Ultrasound scan) to check heart function.

Possible coronary artery blockage. Keep in mind that women tend to have higher false positives (incorrect diagnosis). The reason, when doctors were first using models to diagnose positive and negative stress tests, they used only men. Women are built differently then men and the way the nuclear particles exit the body are sometimes deflected in such a way that the nuclear camera gives a false reading for the doctors to read.
