i got my first tat in October, and i love it. if you really want it, get it and dont let anyone talk you out of it. just make sure its what you really want because its not gonna go away. lol hmm, how about just a simple word like believe, or a skull, and if you dont where to put it on your body, they can place it ina couple of places and you can decide which looks better.

You should never get one unil you're not sure in the pic. I've wanted a tattoo for the last 5 years of my life, and I set up a rule for myself: whenever I find a nice idea or picture, I wait half a year. If I still like it a lot after half a year, that means I wouldn't be bored with it after a few months (or even weeks!). If I don't, then I forget about it. If you wait a few months, even you will be surprised at yourself - at the weird thoughts you had a few months ago and the ugly pics you were actually considering to get on your skin permanently.
If you think half a year is just way too much time, you shouldn't get a tattoo, you're not determined enough. Remember it's gonna stay on your body for the rest of your life, no matter how small it is. If you really want it, you will wait a few months, trust me. Don't rush just because your birthday is coming up. If you will find the right pic you will know instantly, you won't need to search any more. Just wait. If you can stand the waiting, you will love your tattoo and you will be satisfied.

If you're serious, you need to think very hard about what part of your body you want the tattoo on *before* you start thinking about a design. I think this is one of the biggest mistakes people make. The problem with small designs is that they look completely lost if you have them on a big area, eg shoulder blade, belly, lower back, upper arm, buttock. Something very small will just look like a blemish in those areas.
If you really do want something the size of a postage stamp, you should probably think about having it somewhere like your foot or your wrist where smaller designs look good. Warning: you really will need to have it done somewhere that you can cover it up for job interviews, etc.
Bear in mind that you may be kind of goth now, but you might well not be in 10-20 years. Don't rush ahead with a design just for a specific date: be very careful about choosing something that won't date and that you really like. You will be stuck with it forever, and laser removal is costly and hurts like hell.
I've put a couple of pages below that might start you thinking about design inspiration. Try looking at tattoos from lots of different cultures and seeing what inspires you.

Go with something original, look at the flash in tattoo parlors for ideas and talk to the artists, they can point you decide in the right tattoo for you. A custom piece will cost a little more then the flash on the wall but then why would you want to have the same design that 30,000 other people have.

I agree with everything Saint Bee said, particularly being able to easily cover it up for job interviews.
However, if you really have no clue as to what you want, then wait a bit longer. This is a mark you'll have to live with for the rest of your life, so it's not a decision that should be made on a whim. There's nothing wrong with waiting until your next birthday (or another special occaison) to get it. Make sure this is something you wouldn't mind seeing on yourself as a 90 year old great great grandmother....

Natural body and well taken care of is always the HOT SEXY one and work of art like how the Greeks admired it. Natural lasts forever and it is our birthday suit. Your body is not garbage or some piece of paper. Natural outlasts cliches. Celebrate of the body of your birth. :)

I got my first tatto 35 years ago. Don't get one. They get ugly when you're older.
