And for your brothers and sisters?

Did they tell you where their names came from?

And what about the names you chose for your children?

I'm not asking for any names, it's up to you if you want or not to write your real name here. I'm only asking for your stories.

Thank you for sharing, and have a wonderful Sunday! :)

My first name is Maria. It's the name of the Mother of Jesus, and a very common name for girls, in my country ~ Brazil. It's also my Mom's first name. :)

Hey Auntie Moon!
Lots of great answers here!! Just shows how much the asker is respected to have some many well thoughtout and personal answers.

Ironically, there was a movie that came out a year or two before I was born that was very popular, and the heroine had a nice "J" name. One that hadn't been (to that point) overly used.
Ten years later there were 5 and 6 of those "J"s in every classroom. And not enough direvitives or nicknames for each to be called something different.

My mom has always been big into family history. And her way to honor her ancestors was to give her children first and middle names that had been in the family.
Niether I nor my brothers like our middle names, though we respect why they were given. Mom - bless her - did give us first names that were less objectionable. My first and middle honor my great great grandmother as their were her first and last names. This also was done to honor her daugther my great gram while she was still alive.

I did decide for myself that I would do things differently.
I wanted my children to have something "unusual" in that they wouldn't have 5 classmates with the same first name.
I know what my son will be named (arriving sometime in this next month). His first can be used in it's fullness to be formal and dignified, or can be casual friendly and familar in it's shortened version. And his middle is a true alternate name in that if he wishes to be quite different, say like an artist, he can use that.

I think most parents want something as good or better for their children, and the first evidence of this is what is written on the birth certficate.

My name was kept as per the process ♥ has mentioned.
For my son, I picked up a name from a Hindi movie which means a war hero. I liked it because I want my son to be a winner thru out his life. I have made major decisions in my life on the basis of what I should be doing & not always what I wanted to do. Do not want my baby to do that so picked up that name. His name neither belongs to my caste nor to my husband's & no doubt almost all relatives were against it so much that they still refuse to take his name & will ask me how is ur son or how is the little one ? But all this has made me believe that I made the right choice for his name. I am not going to let other's decide for his life & name is just the beginning.............I am sure my son will live upto his name because he will make choices & then I am always there to support him....as I always say...Main hoon na :)

I even have an exceedingly unusual call, it is not in any respect elementary and to make it worse I also have a kinfolk version of the spelling, it replace into my great great great aunts call or perhaps though it rather is gaining popularity in this is unique spelling now I even have in elementary terms in the near previous began listening to little ones with the call and function never met absolutely everyone with the comparable spelling as me, i replace into teased somewhat as a baby for having the call and did replace it to Kate while i replace into 10 for some months, I often merely bypass with the help of my nickname to maintain hassles although I even have had no longer something yet compliments on my call for countless years now, I gave my little ones classic names that are no longer elementary right here, there should not be 5 of them in a lecture room yet they gained't be teased for having surprising names the two.

Well, my first name and my brother's first name both came from the idea that my mom wanted a name everyone could spell and pronounce right in our life...

As for our middle names, she chose names that came from other members of our family, like our grandparents...

What she never realized is that our real last names would cause so much grief over the years, and even when I got married, I never had a last name in all 3 marriages that people could spell or pronounce correctly...

It has always been a nightmare for me with my last names...
I always felt that people did not pay attention to what they saw on paperwork and they still spelled and pronounced our names wrong...

No matter where I go or what I do, no one spells or pronounces my last name right and it surely gets tiring, because I think it is so simple...

Yes. I was born in Croatia but came to Australia when I was 3. My mum used to work in hospitality in hotels along the Adriatic coast. During the summer time lots of workers came to Croatia from other parts of Europe to work in the hotels etc especially from Germany. Mum had a really good friend she used to see year after year with a very common name in Germany, I have even been asked if I am German a number of times. She loved the name and called me it when I was born. I'm glad she did because I love my name!

My dad named was very religious and very much into the bible. Stephen was a mentioned in the there but I don't know who or what he did. I know he got stoned(not high from weed--lol), but stoned to death with stones. If I was born a girl they said my name was going to be Sarah. One of my favorite female names.

Hmm...I have 2 brothers and 4 sisters. All from characters in the bible. lol.

Thank you for the thoughtful question. I'd like to hear the why's and how's of your name. I know the meaning of your name and I think your name is one of the most beautiful names ever.

Thanks, you have a great week!

My name's origin is from Brazil as well. I remember my mother telling me that my name was from a Brazilian Indian tribe - and it was actually the name of a Queen. I later confirmed that my name's meaning is "Queen of the Sweet Waters".

BTW, my mom's name is also Maria :-)

My name was chosen because my two older sisters names started with the same consonant. (S) I would have been Steven if I where a boy.

I chose my children's names because of the meaning. One daughter is named after my beloved Grammie. Their middle names are those of my ancestors.

My last son was named exclusively by my husband and it was chosen because it was the name of his favorite character from ancient Celtic literature.

Fun question Moon, thanks.

wow. well, i have two names; the first one is the one i was christened with and the other was the one my parents wanted for me, and is on my birth certificate. (yes - its a mess) . i was christened with my granma's name, but my mum had her heart set on another of a saint she had dreamt of. (thats the Damien part). i have two elder brothers, one got the name of my aunt who had died in war, the year before he was born, and my other brother got my grandpa's name. im planning to name my children after an idol - a revolutionary in history, and if i have a second, after my grandma's name - that im supposed to have - and never use- so it doesnt get lost through the family. its really a lovely name, its after a small greek goddess. thats just about it. :P oh and im from an island in the meditteranean; cyprus. so is my entire family.

yes!!

well, here (as everywhere else in the world, i guess) babies are considered god's gift to parents..so, while naming them god's blessings are asked for, usually the priests assigns an alphabet for the child, which could be lucky for him/her..and then the parents choose a name for the child starting from that alphabet....so, it is beleived that indirectly the baby is named by god....

i was named by my father....there is a line in the holy scriptures, which roughly translated in English means, if you keep chanting the lord's name, remember him, pray to him, then you will attain eternal bliss...my dad says he'd always believed this, and that this has always been his favourite part...the alphabet given to my parents was 'S'...and this line begins with the word that became my first name..my name means prayer, or remembering..in my mother toungue...

same for my brother..except that he was named by my maternal aunt...his name begings with a 'D'..and means the one who never loses...i'm not sure where it came from...but it suits him..

you have a great sunday too... :D
