A couple of things I think about:
I take pictures (not digital); they'll age. Although the analogy is fairly weak, that aging doesn't prevent me from taking them. I'll do what I can to protect them and will thus extend their quality, but I'm under no illusion that they will change.
I also consider people who get hung up on the whole age thing. If someone is only passing on getting a tattoo due to how they will look at 80, I feel sorry for them with all of their fears (of which this is just the tip of the iceberg). What a terrible life they do and will lead, perpetually afraid of aging. Someday that first wrinkle or gray hair will appear, and sooner than they think. Will they adapt, or will that be the beginning of their end?
I've seen people who don't adapt; they tend to die early (60-70), and not happy. The last couple decades of their life is spent in coulda/shoulda/woulda mode, staring out a window all day perched in their rocker. One friend who's in her late 50s (nicely inked & in damn good shape) is a caretaker for some senior citizens, and has seen this tragedy up close - people waiting to die. She's active and *very* busy, and and yet as little as 5-10 years younger than her practically immobile patients.
Medical science being what it is and extrapolating based on my age versus those in their venerable years, I don't expect to die before 100, and likely healthier than the current average American in their 60s. Decades from now YA will be a hazy memory at best, but I'll still think of those aged coulda/shoulda/wouldas as I bicycle past them on their rockers on my way to a touchup.

I don't really think about how distorted a tattoo can get from aging, since I know it's inevitable. When the time comes, I'll decide if it is worth touching up, but in the meantime, I do my best to take care of the tattoos (and myself). As for what it'll look like wearing a gown...I hate dressing up, especially dresses/gowns, so that wasn't a factor. However, I do think about placing them so that they can be concealed or exposed, depending on the situation.
If there ever was an occasion in the future when I would have to (God forbid!!) wear a gown, the tattoos are a part of me and I am proud of them,so having them show isn't a big deal.

I do think about the distorted look as I age but it does not bother me. As far as the touching up, the new inks being used now do not fade as much as the ones from 20 years ago. Most of my tattoos are covered when wearing a t-shirt so I am not too worried about the affects of the sun damaging the ink as for the one on my forearm, I put sunblock on if I am going to be out in the sun for an extended period of time. When the time comes that I think I need a touch up, then that is when I will decided if I will get it redone or not. I tend to get my tattoos where I can cover them with a t-shirt, not because I am ashamed of them but because of the corporate environment.

These are really typical fears, but think about this:
- when you'll be old and wrinkly, all the other thousands of people who have tattoos right now and are young will be wrinkly and old too. Everyone will be used to seeing tattoos on old people, since this generation has to age too, and many old people will have tattoos (yes, grandmas with even lower-back tattoos). It won't be weird or gross. And your body doesn't age in a day, you will see all stages of getting old and wrinkled. It's not like you don't see yourself for a few years and then look into the mirror and have a heart attack. You will be used to it, it will be okay, it is a long process.

I really don't worry about those issues. I thought about them, but I never worried.
1. My family ages REALLY well. My mother is 50 and was just carded to buy a bottle of wine!
2. They have makeup (i.e. Color Tration, Tattoo Camo) that can cover up any tattoo completely.
3. I have had one for more than 14 years, and its never needed touched up. It does not look green and faded.
4. At 80, no one looks "good".

Yes, when I'm old and wrinkly, my tattoos will be just as old and wrinkly, but I bet my grandkids wont care what my tattoo's look like as long as I have candy in my purse for them. And tattoos wont look all green and faded unless you got them 50 years ago, they actually use all different colors now. And when I want to go out, I put on a gown just like you do, the dress doesnt get caught on the tattoos.

I definately thought about it before I got my tattoo. I have a tattoo on my left hip bone, and even if I'm in a bathing suit its not that visible, so if I'm ever in a gown again it will be hidden. if it needs to be touched up, ill get it touched up but it shouldn't distort too much

yes ive taken all of that into consideration..a nd i think the only time i will be in a gown is when i get married! lol... or go to a fancy party... which never happnes.. bu then again im almost 20 :|. I dont think ant of those issues sould matter if you really want the tattoo. yes all of that will/can happen eventually but its best to enjoy your tattoo when it still looks nice. But i dont think i would care abotu i showign in a gown. the tattoo is part of me and has significant meaning so why dpo i care who sees it or not. :]
its just like piercings in a way"ewww stretched ear what will that look like when yor 50!" or "theres going to be a scar where this piercing once was"
scars to me are just reminders of the past.. lol and plus.. scars arent THAT ugly. :]

Most people who get more then 1-2 tattoos are not the kind of people who worry about those kinds of things.
Some of my tattoos are silly to people, but are meaningful to me...
like I have a tat of a monkey on my back...because I got a lot of other 'monkeys off my back'
my other favorite is a tattoo for my dog it's a pink jelly bean that says "lilly" (her nickname is lilly bean)
but at 23..with 23 tattoos...I don't think I'll be dabbling in regret over them

sure i think about those things. skin ages. i am not going to look like i'm 25 forever but my tattoos are a part of who i am. as my body ages so will my tattoos. i do plan on getting them touched up when they need it and i plan on taking very good care of myself so i will age as gracefully as possible but i'm not in denial about what i'll look like when i'm older.
the clothes i wear now show my tattoos in certain instances. just last night we all dressed up and went out of st. patrick's day and my tattoos showed. i don't think that having tattoos makes a dressed up woman any less dressed up or less attractive. like i said, my tattoos are a part of me and i embrace them for what they are. if i want them to be hidden i can certainly do that with the right clothing choice both now and when i'm older.
