If you have Windows XP, it should have come with Windows Movie Maker, which you can find in your start menu. If you're looking for an alternative to this, or you have another version of Windows, may I recommend Avid's FreeDV, which you can find here:
http://www.avid.com/freedv/
If you're running Mac, then check out iMovie, which came with your operating system - you'll find it in the Applications folder.

Hope that helps,

If you are looking for professional editing software then you can't go wrong with sony vegas+ dvd of course the price is between 500-600$ but it has received the award for product of the year 2005 and an award for best buy. Compared to other video editors this is the best and this powerfull editor annihilates all the concurrents available on the market today

If you're just wanting something simple then VirtualDub will do the job perfectly. It's a very simple video editor - you load in the video file and it lets you remove segments, resize, crop, apply filters or effects. It's a very handy program - surprisingly powerful given it's simplicity.

Womble MPEG Video Encoder. its not free $69, but you don't have to tie your PC up for hours of encoding on minor or major arrangements because there is no encoding involved! it just joins up the bits and takes less than a minute to compile in to one video file. no need for a fast computer, no steep learning curve and very easy to use and comes with useful effects like cropping and fading. free trial here.. http://www.womble.com/products/mvw.html

I've been using Nero 7 Premium and its ok although it crashes a lot when you make music videos so when you edit something always save it because can crash at any time.
