It really depends on what you mean by modest? But do try 'Spice I am' - bad name I know - but this is where the Thai chefs eat - amaazing food - wentworth ave - near central station. Also, Bill and Tonys on Stanley street for good basic Italian, and I love Saigon Bay on Oxford street - amazing cheap Vietnamese - make sure you have the Beef rolls!

As most ppl have said Chinatown but i have another suggestion: Pancakes on the rocks located on Hickson rd. They have Crepes, pancakes and also pizza and is really affordable. Also just outside the CBD area such as surry hills and newtown u could find more affordable/good food!

If you like Chinese Food then Chinatown is the place to go. All pubs/hotels serve moderately priced meals and have quite a variety.
