I'm in the UK and going back to attend my sisters wedding in the USA. I'm not in the wedding party. I have a fantastic dark brown, strapless dress (detachable straps) that is nearly floor length. The skirt of the dress is floaty and my entire shoe can be seen. Is this formal length? The shoes are a sparkly slip in sandal and I have a gold wrap for my shoulders. The question I have is will I be overdressed? It's a 3pm church wedding with a 5-11pm reception. I don't want to feel overdressed but I really love the look. I haven't been to a wedding in about 20 years so I don't really know what 'they're wearing' to weddings now. Any suggestions or advice?

Traditionally a 3pm wedding would not be as formal. But an evening reception would be. So you'll probably have a bit of everything. It depends on the bride too but since you mentioned formal, I'm assuming you have been told its a formal occasion and not like a garden or beach wedding.

With there being such a long gap b/t the wedding and the reception, you'll see a bunch of different dress. Some will wear more like a dressy pants suit, some will wear more of a dressy casual dress (something you might wear to work or out to dinner with a boyfriend). Some will wear cocktail attire and some more floor length. Especially for you though being related, you will be in a lot of the pictures. You'll be in pictures with the wedding party and it's important for you to border more of too dressy than underdressy. I'd check to make sure the wedding party isn't wearing a similar dress or colors that would clash horribly.

I think a floor length floaty dark brown dress sounds GORGEOUS. Plenty formal for a formal wedding/reception. Most importantly you love the look and therefore will pull it off with sophistication and confidence. You'll look great!

You can never be over dressed at a wedding.
But if your not sure .....why not ask your sister what she thinks?
It sounds lovely though!!
