There are a number of good books and authors. Everyone has their favorites. I've been doing HCI for companies like Apple and eBay for 15 years, here are some of my favorites:

Don Norman - The Design of Everyday Things (a good introduction to the topic)

Jakob Nielsen - Designing Web Usability (Jakob has a bunch of books that are good, I like this one as a beginning book because it is prescriptive, as well as general - it introduces the topic, and tells you how to do things)

Depending on what you're trying to learn, you can also review the HCI guidelines for Windows or the Macintosh, or you can learn about the process of design, such as how to use Personas (Alan Cooper has a good book on this).

If you go to a site like Amazon and start looking at some of these titles and authors, it will also show you similar books, so you should be able to find a book that meets your specific needs fairly easily.

The biggest HCI conference (CHI) is taking place in a few weeks in San Jose CA. You can also attend that, see some presentations and explorer the exhibitors booths (some of the exhibitors also sell books there, so you can talk to them about ones they like). The website for the conference is: http://www.chi2007.org/

Good Luck.
