all the answers thus far are pretty good answers.
the liver is mainly located on the right side of your body, it does extend slightly towards the left.
if you are having pain, it is called upper right quadrant pain. it usually is a dull to sharp pain, which comes on gradually, peaks and then reduces again (sort of like a contraction).
there are many times your liver can be inflammed and sometimes it's not that noticable, however, if you've pains that tend to feel as though your lungs are hurting, chances are, your liver (which has a very poor nerve structure) may be inflammed and pressing on other organs which do have a good nerve structure, thus feeling pain.
other symptoms as well a such as loss of appitite, however, not always does a person lose the urge to eat.
you can have light colored stools, pains that feel as though it's your gallbladder (stones)-this can be a first symptom of liver disease.
other more common issues in those with liver disease are lethargy, little or no toleration for alcohol-which is a good thing. some may have fever (usually low grade), others may have a slight tinge of yellow to the skin-but not to the extent of noticing.
the urine can also be a dark golden yellow/orangy tint.
if you think you have liver disease, lay off the alcohol, otc meds, things containing iron (red meat, vitamins and some greens) and see your doctor.

On right side. If you feel pain when pressed slightly, one can conclude it has inflamed. Excess consumption of alcohol causes inflamed liver. For your information, some people born with liver situated at left side. But this is very rare phenomena.

Please see the web pages for more details on Liver, Hepatitis and Cirrhosis.
Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver. The disease can be caused by:
* Infections from parasites, bacteria, or viruses (such as hepatitis A, B, or C)
* Liver damage from alcohol, drugs, or poisonous mushrooms
* An overdose of acetaminophen, which is rare but deadly
* Immune cells in the body attacking the liver and causing autoimmune hepatitis
Cirrhosis is fibrosis that progresses to produce diffuse disorganization of normal hepatic structure, characterized by regenerative nodules surrounded by dense fibrotic tissue. Symptoms may not develop for years and are often nonspecific, such as anorexia (loss or deficiency of appetite for food), fatigue, and weight loss. Late manifestations include portal hypertension, ascites (free fluid in the peritoneal cavity), and liver failure. Diagnosis requires liver biopsy. Treatment generally is supportive.

Inflamed Liver Treatment
It is very important to identify the cause of the condition in order to provide appropriate treatment. Once the cause is identified, one should follow the following:
If the condition is due to increased alcohol intake or abuse, one is advised to avoid and cease intake. The patient is usually given and recommended to take corticosteroids to decrease inflammation.
Once the inflammation has gone to the advanced stage, a liver transplant is advised by the doctor.
You can know more other ways to treat liver diseases, such as suitable diet, natural measures .you can refer to here to understand more:http://adola.net/go/fattyliver-bible/

It's on your right side just under the ribs. You'll feel pain, sharp at times or a dull, continuous ache, nausea.
Your belly may swell up..all depends what's wrong with the liver to display different symptoms really.
