I have been reading a lot about Texas Hold 'em, but the term 'limper' seems to avoid definition.

What is 'a limper'?

I am rather surprised only one person on this got the answer correctly so far. It is not simply in Texas Hold'em, it could be in any form of poker. The term "limper" is a term for someone sitting on a weak hand that "limps" in(calling a small bet in a good position, calling the big blind, or from the big blind calling a small bet). Kind of like if you have a weak leg you limp in. One pro I have noticed limps a lot is Daniel Negreanu. He is rather infamous for always wanting to see the first cards to come out. Although, I do not personally recommend limping a lot, it is good in some cases it is a good way to bluff the flop if you know everyone is weak. Hands I tend to limp in with are J 9 suited or 8 10 suited, and so forth. In a game like stud I tend to limp in with hands such as A 10 9 (random). Also, a lot of limpers will tend to call with suited hands, hoping to catch a flush on the flop. It is good to ocassionally limp in if you are a tight player, because it makes people wonder how tight you really are. If in the situation you are a loose player just limping in is a common thing, so portraying that you are just limping in with a strong hand can confuse competitors and often times can pay off greatly. Using the limp can be very beneficial at times but at the same time you have to be very careful. For instance in the situation in Texas Hold'em you limp in with 5 2 suited, and catch the flush. You have to watch your position. In a late position if there are checks all around you should fire out a small to mid bet to test the field. A re-raise you might want to think back to what you've noticed of the player re-raising because a 5 2 flush does not beat an AK flush. Also, limping in with low connecting cards such as 5 6 with a flop of 7 8 9 can be a big dangerous as well, and you'll want to make sure no one has the higher end of the straight. So overall with limping you want to watch your position, the board, and the players as with all hands. However, you have to be extra careful because limping hands can tend to be second rate hands to the nuts, so unless you catch the nuts be very conservative with that hand.

To protect yourself with limpers you need to study the players, maybe lose a small few pots if you have to, and see what they tend to limp in with. Every person tends to have certain hands they like to limp in with, one of the most common is the ten deuce suited, because of Doyle Brunson of course. So if you can pick up on what hands players like to limp in with, when you are holding pocket aces with a straight draw on the board, you know better whether to hold'em or to fold'em.

Hope this helped.

Most strategies tell you that if you are first person to enter the pot after the blinds you should raise. If you just call, you are a limper. When you are last to act, you know how many limpers there are and helps you decide what you should do

it's a person who calls the big blind bet...(no raise)...

for example, if the blinds are 2 and 5, then a limper just calls the 5 dollar bet.

A limp is when you only call the big blind instead of raising. The term is normally used when a player does this while holding a good hand that would normally merit a raise (a pocket pair, for example).
