Dear Whitney~ Faith guides and guards your heart.
When you "know" God and Gods plans and His rules ,then you avoid doing what goes against YOUR conscience. This is how you guard your heart.
Once we let down our guard and go against our conscience, we leave our Faith open to attack by other temptations. SO we try to live IN FAITH, so as NOT to be tempted ..

By praying and studying the word faithfully first of all. Also by being very careful about the things you watch on t.v./dvd's/etc. ,the music you listen to, the kind of people you most closely associate with (like choosing your friends carefully). You just want to be careful about what you entertain in your thoughts, because given enough attention, wrong things can get in your heart. You want to keep your heart tender toward God. (Rather than having a hardened heart where you don't receive the things of God easily.)
God bless you Whitney :)

Read Proverbs 4, in the King James if you have one. Your answer is in the context and the verse about keeping your heart is the key to understanding the whole chapter, because God says that out of the heart flow the issues of life. Therefore your understanding of the whole chapter depends on the state of your heart toward God, the bible, prayer, testimony, and how you seek his face daily. Our hearts are desperately wicked and we have to keep them focused on God and his word, otherwise our heart will lead us far off the path.

(Jeremiah17:9) says that the heart is more treacherous than anything else, so this is why we need to guard it and keep it in check, and not let it get corrupted. Since your heart is the center of your thoughts, then to guard our heart would then mean that we would need to control our thoughts keep them on things that are going to keep us close to God's way of thinking. So if we Guard our heart the right way we can get to the source of life(Proverbs4:23) this is why it is very important to guard our hearts and keep them going in the right direction and not veer of the roadwe can guard our heart by keeping our minds on wholsome thoughts.

The best way is to hold God in your heart and no one can't take it from you. If you believe in God nothing shouldn't hurt you, but natural causes. You have to accept God in your life and not back down only He can protect you in the human world and spirit world.

Read the Bible. Be a doer of the word and not just a reader/hearer.
Put on the armor of God and walk in righteousness. Walk in the Spirit, not in the flesh...it is your fate, turn to God, time is short.

I would think it means that you have to be discerning in the things you value in life, because there are treasures that last and ones that don't and 'where your treasure is, there your heart is' Only heavenly things are eternal.
