Islam was not spread by the sword. This long list of verses from the Holy Quran and the Traditions of Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him) show that Islam at it's core and at its source is a religion of peace.

Terrorists who persecute innocent people because of their faith are not welcome - their use of Islam as a scapegoat, does not make Islam what they portray it to be.

2:256 There is no compulsion in religion, for the right way is clearly from the wrong way. Whoever therefore rejects the forces of evil and believes in God, he has taken hold of a support most unfailing, which shall never give way, for God is All Hearing and Knowing.

16:82 But if they turn away from you, (O Prophet remember that) your only duty is a clear delivery of the Message (entrusted to you).

these sources, including an Indonesian one seem to indicate that it was spread as much by the sword as by peaceful means. Islam seems to have began to spread when various Hindu and Islamic kingdoms used the factional fighting between the Portuguese, dutch and British to further their ambitions. I don't think Islam spread at Asia by force. They were spread by the muslim merchant that came to Asia. And actually the muslim army always ask the opposing country if they want peace or war. If they choose peace the other religion except Islam in that country have to pay tax. If they refuse then they will use brute force. So, Islam never force them to convert religion at once.

You say Muhammad approached towns and gave the leaders a choice: either submit, and accept that Muhammad is a prophet, getting revelations directly from God (giving Muhammad unquestionable power in any given matter) or face the sword. Sure, many could count the numbers of the invading Islamic army and chose submission (Islam) over war. And you say this is not spreading Islam by the sword?

Also, as for paying the tax, that privilege was reserved only for people of the book (Christians and Jews). After Muhammad took Mecca, he gave the remaining polytheists throughout the region four months to either convert or to get out of Arabia, or they would be killed. I guess this wasn't spreading Islam by the sword, either?

I also liked the counter-question which can be expanded to: "If converting by a sword is so detestable, what do you think of those converting entire countries to democracy by using depleted uranium bombs, bunker-busters, carpet bombing, chemical weapons etc . & also those who resist such forceful conversion?
