Different churches take different positions on the death penalty. I only know the position of the Catholic Church, which is against it. Pope John Paul II explained that the death penalty was the only way to defend society in the old testament days when there were no high security prisons for serial murderers, but there's no need for the death penalty today. God gave life; only God can take it away.
Oh, and thunder, Joshua lived about 1600 years before Jesus, so please keep it straight -- your story is from the old testament way way way before Jesus. Catholics also believe that, although God doesn't change, our understanding of him does, which enables us to move beyond some of the horror stories in the old testament. I don't deny that they're in there, but come on, its 3600 years later for christ's sake. And this kind of thing was not Jesus' approach AT ALL.

Well, one of those ten commands was "Thou Shall Not Kill," so I take that as a - he wouldn't be kindly happy about people killing another, even if they did commit a crime.
All things considered, we aren't "God" or "Jesus" - so we can't judge anyone. Uh, but what do I know?
Also, Christians often like to play God - and some even act as if thunder and lightning emit from their fingertips, and strike down judgement upon others for "whatever."
However, the Bible is pretty clear to ME that people should be allowed to freely act on their own, but not harm others and respect each other. These radical Christian people just don't get out of the trailer much.
XOXO!

For.
Jesus never said he did not believe in the Torah and in there, there are a number of sins (crimes) that are punishable by death. If he were opposed to the death penalty, he would be opposed to the Torah.
(Then again, he and his followers DID pretty well trash it.)

when jesus told joshua to go into the land of milk and honey he told him to kill everyone even the babies and the animals so no evilness will be around to encourage those who belived in him and he also did this with the king saul. so yes god is for the death penality for all those who possess and use evilness to thier gain in life
