I have a Boxer, he's just under 5 months old. Recently he has been exposing his penis a little more than what i would consider normal. At first i thought it was just him being an adolescent and "figuring things out," but the past couple days it seems like more than that. It's most of the time when he is walking around or playing its hanging out, when he lays down it seems to go back in. I've had a male dog before and don't recall this happening. Is this something i should worry about, or is it truly just him learning what he has in there?

i do plan on getting him nuetered, he's scheduled for the 2nd week of April.

Absolutely normal. He has NO control over it..It is likely just larger in its sheath than your other dog's. It will happen some after he is neutered too.

It is normal some male dogs will just happened to get more over stimulated than others, basically an excitement response, neutering will not prevent.
The only time when it is a medical problem is if the penis is not retracting back into the sheath, you may have to lend some assistance if the dog is showing discomfort/distress by applying some KY jelly and help by pulling the sheath over, if an ongoing problem the vet can do a surgical repair to allow for easier retraction, it's not that common but I figured I would mention since it possible and could potentially save someone from running to an e-vet for something they could handle themselves

I have 3 boxers now...that is a sign of a happy puppy.
That will happen when they get excited also, is nothing to really worry about....as long as the color looks correct and not inflammation is present. Oh one other thing, they will on occasion have a slight discharge, don't worry about that either unless it gets excessive, then more than likely it is a sheath infection the vet can give you meds to take care of it.
Congratulations on owning one of the most loving dogs there is in my book. I also call them the clowns of the dog world.

Sometimes male dogs expose their penis a lot more than people think should be exposed. I'm not too sure if that's something bad on the dogs part, but I think if it really bothers you, you should talk with your Vet. about it. Heck, just call them up and ask just to be sure either way. Good Luck.

We had a dog that did this and the vet said he was just 'excited'. He's learning new things and it might feel good. When we had ours neutured it stopped happening (well, once in awhile as normal)so hang in there and it'll be over soon!!
