I watch the world series of poker on espn but have never actually been to something like this. Just curious how long it takes to narrow the field down to the final table, are there breaks, etc. Thanks

the world series of poker consists of several events...somewhere between 30 and 40 events...they differ in buy in amounts and the type of poker game. There is usually one every day for about 30-45 days. I'll link a schedule after this post, but basically, the smaller buy in events last a day to get to the final table. But this is totally dependent on the number of players also.

The main event which is the biggest and most popular lasts almost a week just because of the sheer number of players.....They usually break down the field into 2 or 3..like one group playing on one day 1, another playing day 2, and yet another playing on day 3...then all those winners play on day 4, and so on and so on. Till a final table is reached.

Just remember the Main Event is the most popular but there are so many other events.

Everyone starts with 10,000 chips and the blinds start at 25/50 and increase every 2 hours. There is usually a quick break after each level, and maybe a dinner break.
There are so many entries that they divide the initial players into 3 groups. Group 1 plays day 1, group 2 day 2, and group 3 day 3. All remaining players go to day 4.
Blinds keep increasing. When they reach 100/200, antes start as well. As players get eliminated they eliminate the higher numbered tables first. They also move people from table to table to keep the number of people at each table balanced

This past world series that jamie gold won took 5 days

This year, they will be 55 events. Buy-in between $500(casinos employees) and $50.000(horse). Each event are between 2 to 3 days long (without counting the main event) and depending on how many entrance for each events, you can play for 8 to 14 hrs a days. (some events start late on the morning 11am, noon)
Yes they are breaks, but if you talk about getting up to go the bathroom for example....Don't wait for the break(to many people running for it). You get up(when you are the big blinds) and take 5, 10mns. And the players and the dealer still at the table, that way you avoid (bad) people to still some of your chips. That happen (it's sad) It should not be the responsibility of the player to "protect" his chips.....But it's good to be aware of it.
You get moved from tables, it can be random, depending on how long you pass at the same table, how many players have been eliminates.....etc

Take care

It takes years and years to narrow the field in the world series of poker. It is like a wine you have to put it in the freezer for like 10 years and then shake it up and squeeze in some lemon juice.

they have each and every variety of poker possible on the poker excursion and in the WSOP. the only interest they prepare the fool wannabes on television isn't any minimize Texas holdem, premier many to have faith that's what the WSOP is all approximately while this isn't any longer. this is merely one significant experience of many.
