It is very important for the movement of water from the roots to the leaves.

The ascent of sap takes place in the xylem carrying water and necessary chemicals and nutritional substances to the leaves and other parts at the top of the tree. Without the ascent of sap the leaves could not carry out photosynthesis producing the sugar and energy for the plant and the plant would eventually starve to death.
The xylem transports sap from the root up the plant. Xylem sap consists mainly water and inorganic minerals can also contain some smaller amounts of organic elements as well. The sap in xylem is always upward.
Unlike xylem (which is composed primarily of dead cells), the phloem is composed of still-living cells that transport sap. The sap is a water-based solution, but rich in sugars made by the photosynthetic areas. These sugars are transported to non-photosynthetic parts of the plant, such as the roots, or into storage structures, such as tubers or bulbs. Movement of sap in phloem is usually downward but can be bidirectional as well taking the sugars from photosynthesis were it is needed most. Good Luck

The sap is the life blood of a plant. Sap is what feeds the leaves, cause the limbs to grow and everything that takes place while the tree is leafed out and growing. In the winter the sap goes back down into the roots and the tree goes dormant so the sap will not freeze.

water and minerals absorbed by the roots are transported to other parts of the plant body this transportation against the gravitational pull is called ascent of sap.this is unidirectional
