if you exercise at a high level of intensity it will, this is called the "after-burn" effect but it's really excess-post exercise oxygen consumption or EPOC. the oxygen consumption is elevated above resting levels as the body attempts to return the the pre-exercise state.

if you perform aerobic exercise at 70-75% of the Vo2Max for 45-60 minutes the EPOC will remain elevated the longest. the same goes for anaerobic training.

when it comes to exercise this is basically how the body works. training at a low level of intensity to stay in the "fat burning" zone will utilize more free fatty acids (FFA's) during training than does high intensity exercise. training at a high level of intensity will utilize glycogen for energy during training but after training the EPOC utilizes FFA's for energy. so you can either train at a low level of intensity and metabolize fat for an hour or exercise at a high level of intensity, utilize glycogen during training and after the metabolic rate remains elevated for 8-10 hours. boy let's see, this is a tough one...hmmm

this is why the people in the gym that are always just going through the motions, never breathing heavy, etc. and not really exercising never achieve the results that they desire and look the same year after year. the body responds in a very positive manner to controlled physical exertion.

In a way, yes. My spouse, who is a Physical Therapist and nutritionist, says that when you are doing workouts, you burn the calories off because of the extreme exertions that are put upon your body. Thus, your body is at a higher rate of "metabolism" and is not resting at it's normal level of metabolism when sitting still. Once you have completed your workout, your body then has to reinitialize and "work" it's way to that normal rate of metabolism. Granted that this working may only encompass no more than, say 20 to 30 calories, (depending upon your body mass), it is enough to say that you are burning a few more calories after you have "finished" your workout.
Another way to burn an extra 100 calories after your workout, is to drink a 16 ounce glass of very cold water! The cold water is reacted to by the heat of your stomach and has to "work" at getting the water the same temperature as the surrounding liquids, thus burning more calories as your drink!
Happy Exercising!!

Yes, your body does keep burning extra calories after your workouts. Experts aren't sure how long the "bonus" burn lasts - it may be less than an hour for aerobic workouts - but one thing is for sure: You won't get any bonus burn if you don't exercise.
