Exercising in polluted air is simply not good for you. When you exercise, your breathing rate increases, so if there's something bad in the air, you're breathing more of it.
One of the worst things in the air is ozone (which is unrelated to the ozone layer that is high in the atmosphere). Ozone is formed when car exhaust reacts with sunlight and it can float a long way from its source. Ozone pollution is worst on sunny days, at midday, and immediately after rush hour. The air is usually best early in the morning. Take this into account if you plan to exercise in congested areas.

There is always a chance that you will be in area that has some type of pollution of some sort.
If you are really worried about working out in a cleaner area, set up a home gym in your house and place an air purifier in the room that you are working out in. Of course you will have to motivate your self to work out, since it will be in your house. You will have to keep your self from getting distracted from your working out at home.
But remember pollution is going to be where ever you are any way, but if it helps you breath easier when your working out then work out at home. Set it up as I have said.
