Merry Meet my young friend!
I am sorry you have had to deal with a few of the ignorant ones who really know nothing about it. Unfortunatly that is something you will have to get use to. Just don't let them intimidate you.
I am not Wiccan, I am Pecti-Witan (a hedge witch) a solitary. Wiccan coven life is not for me.
If you are reluctant to jump into Wicca, you might try it out as a solitary. Get the book "Wicca, Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" by Scott Cunningham. It will give you a lot if insight and may get you started. It is a good book to learn (or confirm).
I have been a practicing witch for over 40 years, so if I can help you, please feel free to contact me.
Bright Blessings

Well, since each Wiccan is responsible for their own development within the religion and many Wiccans practice alone, you can try it out for yourself first (not in a group) if you prefer. We've been called "the world's biggest disorganized religion" ;-). If you try it and find it's not for you, that will be strictly between you and the Gods.

Here are four good links to get you started.

A relatively objective (non-Wiccan) set of articles on what Wiccans do and believe:

http://www.religioustolerance.org/witchcra.htm

Another useful article:

http://www.religionfacts.com/neopaganism/paths/wicca.htm

A good site by Wiccans:

http://wicca.timerift.net

And the US Army Chaplains Handbook excerpt on Wicca:

http://www.religioustolerance.org/wic_usbk.htm

If you're looking to do some reading, I'd recommend "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" by Scott Cunningham, and "The Triumph of the Moon" by Ronald Hutton. I advise you to stay away from anything by Silver Ravenwolf, for reasons outlined in the following essay:

http://wicca.timerift.net/ravenwolf.shtml

If you're looking for Wiccan services in your area, I highly recommend the Witches of the World section at Witchvox:

http://www.witchvox.com/xvn.html

Just use the pull-down menus on the left to find individuals, groups, shops, and events in your area.

And if you have any further questions, please feel free to email me. I have some material for beginners that you might find useful.

EDITED TO ADD: I do not recommend the Correllian Trad's Witchschool, for reasons well outlined in the following three essays:

http://community.livejournal.com/nonfluffypagans/719279.html

Research, research, research. Over the years, I've found that no one religion fits my outlook. Therefore I'm an eclectic solo practitioner (to give it a label). I have taken the portions of every doctrine I've read that I believe to be true, and created my own path. You may find that one doctrine fits you. And that's perfectly all right. Each of us is a true individual, and worthy in our own right.
Good luck in your search
Blessed be.

Wicca is just another way of when you really come down to it saying you believe in the devil so don't get in to it is very dark and hard to get out of once you enter in it and demons will pull you in more and more and you will find your self doing things you don't want to do even when you do not think that there good and still you do them just because a demon has control over you and wants you to do that at this site http://bennyhinn.org/television/tiyd.cfm he has a video of a lady who was controled by this at one point in time its sad what all it can do to you its not good
