Try the link to the pbs website below. During black history month, pbs ran a series where they traced the genealogy of several famous African Americans. The pbs website subsequently has resources and links to help others trace their own history.

For DNA tracing--

Testing Companies' Websites: Yet another option is to search at the websites of some of the companies that offer these genetic tests. These include Family Tree DNA (www.familytreedna.com), Relative Genetics, and DNA Heritage (www.dnaheritage.com). National Geographic also has a project called "The Genographic Project".

To research your ancestors-- ancestry.com and rootsweb.com are good starting point.

There is genetic testing that can match your DNA to that of the specific tribe in Africa you descend from.

the first step is to look for features of your great grand parents that will give some idea which region in Africa that particular features belongs. then you can use your DNA to match with DNA of that particular area,
