When I tell my little dog to use " inside voice" she barks quietly..
I had another little mixed breed dog..We were in a motel room..There was a dog barking across the alley, so my little dog barked. I told him "shhhhh" and he whispered his barks..until we left the motel!

My dog has a “play bark” and a “get away from our house before I run out there and kill you” bark. They are like night and day. The play bark is this cute little high-pitched thing, and the other one is really scary. She’s a dachshund, but her "big" bark sounds like it comes from a dog 5 times her size.

if that is not a normal time for him to bark then there could be something wrong or out of the ordinary. also there could be local laws on the barking constantly, i would say that if it has been going on for more than say 15-20 mins you can always call the police non emergency number in you area.

Yes, they do. Mine have several different barks, and I can tell by the tone whether it is a "car in the yard" bark or a "strange dog on my property" bark.
The "stranger in the yard" bark will rattle the windows. Literally.

Ive heard a lot of barking in my time, and it is ALWAYS loud. Don't know if they can bark quiet, but they at least choose not to.

My dog is always barking up the neighbors. They even tried to kill him once. But anyways, I think they could change their volume when they're frustrated or excited.

my dog is a mini dach, and he barks at different levels. just depends on what he thinks is outside, and if he's sleeping. he'll be sound asleep and just "woof", then get up and run to the screen door and bark.

I have two Australian Healers and they are wild. Their barks; you can distinguish something is up with there tone. If something is not right they will keep barking and not pay attention to me. They are trying to tell you something. Talk to them and you will figure it out.
