He can be traced back to the Canaanite religion through the Ugaritic texts. The Canaanite religion was a polytheistic religion, the chief deity was El and he presided over the Great Assembly of 70 national gods. El appears throughout the Old Testament, but gets translated simply as God. The great flood is taken directly from the Canaanite religion. Even the Great Assembly makes it's way into the Old Testament:

"God presides in the great assembly; he gives judgment among the gods" Psalm 82:1 (New International Version)

Here is another interesting verse:

"When the Most High El gave the nations their heritage, when He divided mankind, He fixed the territories of the peoples according to the number of the sons of El; But Yahweh's share was his people, Jacob was his inherited possession" -Deuteronomy 32:8, ASV of 1901

This passage clearly shows that El and Yahweh are not the same deity. How can Yahweh inherit from himself? The sons of El are the gods that make up the Great Assembly.

The oldest parts of the Old Testament are polytheistic. Monotheism came along later.

What is the mythology behind atheism? (Be very careful how you answer/think about this question) No, He's not a Caananite god. He destroyed the Caananites for their practice of sacrificing their own children in fire to the false gods they worshipped, among other detestable things they did.

Yahweh is God's name. You must know God's character to know why his name is Yahweh. He created us, so you are partially right. Not only is he ruler of the Caananites, but he is ruler over all of us. "Ea" is not his name. Sorry!

YHWH IS KNOWN AS THE TETRAGRAMMATON.

IT IS A NAME OF GOD THAT WAS CONSIDERED TOO SACRED TO BE WRITTEN OR SPOKEN, AND IS REPRESENTED ON ORIGINAL SCROLLS AS FOUR DOTS ....
