Plaque around the gumline will cause the gums to swell. When you brush, do you brush the "tips" of your teeth, or more like 50/50 gums/teeth. That is where the brushing should be...massaging the gums.

Perhaps you flossed to aggressively.
use a soft bristle brush and avoid flossing and brushing your gums for a few days.
be very gentle.
my gums swell on one side of my mouth from time to time, and I find that taking NIACIN, just a small bit of the vit. tablet, if you take too much you get a red flush.......
*when i'm low on Niacin for some reason my gums swell.
same with my dad.
So, try Niacin, just 1/8 of a pill every 20 minutes and if you get red and flush, it only lasts 30 minutes, and asprin will relieve the flush.
If you have a niacin problem, your gums will swell, it's nature's way of telling you, that you need more of this B vitamin.
If you brushed and flossed too hard, that could cause it.
Try the niacin. is it one side of your mouth or all of your gums? look up TMJ and TNG

swollen gums can be gingivitis (which actually means an infection of the gums).
you should make it a point to see your dental doctor to determine the best route of care for you. I'm glad that you've decided to use mouthwash with this, as that could be helpful. I would not floss until you seek treatment.

Plaque is really sticky and attracts bacteria and sugar. Bacteria like to party on your teeth by breaking sugar down into acids that eat away at tooth enamel, causing cavities. If you don't treat plaque, it'll turn into tartar, which is a hardened form of plaque that's hard to remove. Plaque also causes gingivitis, which is the first stage of gum disease. It makes your gums swell, turn red and even bleed!
Try to go see your dentist.

You didn't mention whether this has ever happened before or whether there are any other health problems right now. It could be something pretty serious. Several conditions affecting other parts of your body have early symptoms in the mouth. Please go see your dentist about this.

WHEN YOU HAVE BRACES IT'S ALL THE MORE DIFFICULT TO KEEP EVERYTHING CLEAN AND TIDY. I ALWAYS RECOMMEND THE WATERPIK MACHINE FOR ALL MY PATIENTS, ESPECIALLY THOSE WEARING BRACES. IT'S ALSO VERY HELPFUL TO KEEP THE GUMS MASSAGED WITH THE WATERPICK. YOU'LL FIND THE MACHINE WONDERFUL FOR FLUSHING OUT HARD TO CLEAN OUR FOODS FROM THE WIRES AND BRACKETS.
