I think the cause of diarrhea is more likely from the pill than the cheese. Dogs do fine with cheese in small amounts, and especially young dogs.

In response to Linda...
The recalled food is only for specific canned and pouch dog food.
Puppy Chow (which is just about the lowest quality food out there, by the way) is a dry kibble, not a wet food, and therefore was not on the recall list and therefore cannot be the reason your dog was ill.
However, due to all of the dyes, by-products, artificial ingredients, and fillers such as whole grain corn that Puppy Chow contains, it's not small wonder you were faced with medical issues. Try switching to a premium brand food.
And as for the question regarding the cheese, I doubt that it's the food itself that's giving your dog the diahrrea. More likely than not it's just your pup's body reacting to the trauma of the surgury and the anesthesia. Cheese in small quantities, particularly when your vet recommends it, shouldn't be harmful.

Well, if the dog is fed pretty much one thing and only one thing normally...he/she will get diahrrea when a new food is introduced.
The same thing is true of humans.
P.O.W.'s when fed only a certain food, would get diahrrea when they were freed and able to eat other foods.
Our enzymes just aren't used to it and can't handle it.
That said, some dogs systems will react more strongly more to the change than others...my guess is your dog is one that is more sensitive.
The duration of Diahrrea varies from dog to dog. There is an anti-diahrrea medication. Mine came in my dog first aid kit...and it can be repurchased online. You could try a pet store...not sure if they sell it alone or not.
By the time you order it online...your dog will be over the diahrrea.
When a dog has diahrrea...they lose electrolytes.(which causes dehydration).
Petstores now sell water for dogs that has electrolytes...or...
in a foodstore...you can find water with it in the section where they sell water for babies.
Just add a little to their normal water.
This helps prevent the dehydration diahrrea causes.
Some dog foods have recently been recalled. But they are causing kidney failure and such. I have been trying to tell people that these brand have *always* been made with diseased meat anyways....

I would suggest a call and a visit to the vet that did the procedure. Even though he has diarrhea, he could also be constipate from the cheese and or the medication. The diarrhea can pass through the intestion over the blocked intestine. He needs to drink as much as possible. Try to get him to drink pedialyte, preferably the one that is clear in case the vet wanta a stool specimen. You wouldnt want the test to be discovered. You may purchase this in a plastic bottle usually on the toodler food or in the juice section. Please do not give sweetened sports drink-could worsen the diarrehea. Keep him comfortable and do not force food, he needs the fluids more than food at this point.

If you JUST got him neutered, like today or yesterday, then the anesthesia drugs and the stress could be to blame. If the pill is an antibiotic, that can cause it too. He could be lactose-intolerant, if it was just enough cheese to get the pill down. A lot of cheese can cause pancreatitis sometimes (any strange meal that's high in fat can) but if it was just a bite, that's not enough to cause pancreatitis. Hold off food for 12-24 hours, then feed boiled hamburger and rice or boiled chicken and rice for a day or two, then mix his regular food 50/50 with the meat and rice for a day, then back to regular food. You can also give Imodium tablets, call the vet for a dose, to stop the diarrhea.

Well, there are a number of things that could be happening first. And there are a lot of things u have to put into consideration. First of all how old is your dog? is it fully vaccinated? How soon after did it get diarrhea? How severe is the diarrhea? And what pills are you giving it?
You should just call ur vet and ask him/her. They will be glad to answer your question knowing all the facts.

I doubt it has anything to do with the cheese. I feed my Yorkie pup bits of cheese at times and she never has any problems with it.
I think it might have something to do with the pill rather then the cheese. Have you had problems with you're dog and cheese before? (Perhaps other milk products?) Or problems the first time he took the pill?

You should not have given your dog some cheese to eat. Cheese is very harmful for the kidney of dogs. Although cheese is a milk product, it contains a few oil droplets as well and oil is quite harmful for the dog. This is why your dog is having diahrrea. If your vet has told you to feed him cheese then please go and find a new vet and fast.

The thought of reddish brown diarrhea concerns me. It would really be wise to have your dog's stool sample be checked at the vet coz it might be too much irritation in the digestive tract of your dog hopefully not bleeding. Secondly, human food are not often good for dogs especially cheese; diarrhea, gas and vomiting are signs of irritation. Lastly, browse the literature of the medicine your dog is taking, it might just be one of the side effects. I hope this could help.
