You should flip any matress. I don't see anything wrong with using your own baby's matress for your new baby's. It's all in the family, not like there is any disease to catch from it.
As for sagging, as long as it was a good quality matress, it should last for quite a while.

My husband and I, like Happy who answered first, are getting a Babesafe mattress cover for our daughter who is due in May. We have a used mattress in excellent condition because we just bought a really nice crib at a consignment sale. Please read Dr. Sprott's SIDS research! His Babesafe wraps have been used in New Zealand and Britain and no crib deaths have been reported on the wrapped mattresses. This research is 100 times more convincing than the lackluster efforts of researchers from the US. Check it out: http://thecauseofsids.org/

seems like if the original mattress is in good condition you should not have to worry, now if your big boy damaged the mattress in any way you may just want to put that at the top of your baby shower list and hope you get a new one from friends or babys grandparents.

Oh goodness now MATTERESSES are causing sids...well thank goodness they got away from the tummy sleeping causes sids. The crib I used for my daughter was giving to us by my ex's cousin who's own baby had "out grown" it. It came with everything and I never thought to get a new mattress since the one in the crib was still in good condition. And when I took it down and sold it on consignment the mattress went with it.

First of all congrats on your 2nd bundle of joy. I have two sons which they slept on a use mattress. That mattress had gone through four other babies before my two and they are all healthy. So don't worry and enjoy your new baby.

I have only used second hand materesses for my babies. This matress came from a lady who smoked alot. I got a baby safe matress cover from online.. they stop gases from the materess from being breathed in. I heard though that the newer materesses actually have more gases. Anyway, I am having #2 on a used matress... no worries
