You know like the dog's name will be "Toto" or something and above it it'll say something like "There's no place like home"
or some other phrase or something like "the fighting champion", what is that?

Say a dogs registered name was something like "Windswepts There's no place like home", and they had Toto underneath or in parenthesis. Windswepts would be the kennel's name, There's no place like home would be the registered name of the dog as shown on it's registration papers, and Toto would be the call name (nickname) that the dog answers to.

Its there registration names. The requirements is that its unusual and unique, and 13 characters long. Its for identification purposes. usually the kennel that bred the dog is involved, but not needed you basically can do what you want. If you just want it Bob I guess you can have Bob, but it is ultimately up to the kennel club your registering with to accept that name. Though as long as you pay your registration fee and send in the papers, they dont care too much, all dogs registered are given a identification number and thats all the registry knows your dog as anyway.

There are many ways of naming show puppies, here are a few of the usual ones:

1. Usually the breeder's kennel name is part of the registered name and the buyer's kennel name may also be there, usually added as "of", for instance Happy kennel bred the puppy who was sold to Starlight kennel. The puppy could be named "Happy Puppy of Starlight".

2. Some breeders use part of the parents' names in the puppy's name, for instance, a puppy sired by "High Flyer" and who's mom is "China Doll" could be called "Flying Doll".

3. Some breeders use letters of the alphabet to name pups in a litter, with all having names using the same first letter, such as the "R" litter with Rosie, Ranger, Reyna, Rascal, etc.

4. Some breeders use themes for each litter. For instance, a litter with an "automobile" theme could use names such as "Jeep" and "Mercedes" or "Lexus".

Lots of AKC registered dogs have basically 2 names, their registration name and their "Call" name, the name everybody uses, like Rover, Spot, Fido, etc.

The breeder's kennel name is usually included and some litters have themes: Alphabets, theme parks, movies, songs, etc. The "Call" name may or may not have something to do with the registration name.

My one planned dog, my Golden Girl, (everyone else is a rescue) is named Sidecar's (Sidecar was the kennel name) Lindy Hop. The litter them was swing music and the swing era. The Lindy Hop is a dance from that era.

Her "call name" is Lindy. I happen to like a call name and registration name to make sense.

thats the registered name
any animal that is bred and registered (horses, dogs, cats, rabbits, whatever) has a common name (what we use) and a registered name (the name on their papers) they do this because its a lot easier to figure out which of three "there's no place like home" than hundreds of "toto"

no two akc registerd dogs can have the same name. Therefore it is important to choose an unusual name for the dog. Usually they add to the name of one of the parents such as "puricorn easy's ushi adorabeau". If you send in paper work and the name is a replicate you have to rename the dog. But you usually just call the dog beau.

PaintedR is right on the money. Imagine how confusing it would be if they just had regular dog names- several dogs could be called by the same name- you wouldn't know who was who , even if you had a program ! It's the same in every animal breed registry- horses, cats, even sheep and cattle. It's just the way it is, to truly identify a particular animal, and often indicate it's breeding and bloodlines.

the "fancy" name is the registered (the dogs in the dog shows are not mutts-they are purebreds-so they are registered to prove their lineage-) name of the dog-it usually depicts it lineage-it may contain the name of it's parents/grandparents (as they were also registered) so it is quite a long drawn out name-then the dog also has what's it's "normal" family calls it on an everyday basis.
