"Danse Russe" - William Carlos Williams

"If when my wife is sleeping
and the baby and Kathleen
are sleeping
and the sun is a flame-white disc
in silken mists
above shining trees,--
if I in my north room
dance naked, grotesquely
before my mirror
waving my shirt round my head
and singing softly to myself:
"I am lonely, lonely.
I was born to be lonely,
I am best so!"
If I admire my arms, my face,
my shoulders, flanks, buttocks
again the yellow drawn shades,--

Who shall say I am not
the happy genius of my household

Ah, God, I love that!

Thanks Res, that was sweet. I understand your thinking - it is difficult to be in a family that is close-minded to many things, I know from experience. I just put the question up because I've always loved the poem but I appreciate your kind words... I am fortunate to have been able to find that kinship a number of times, and I hold those friends incredibly close to my heart. I hope you know it's true for you as well - you've got a friend in me.

I can appreciate the sentiment, and most of the poem, though some of it is a bit silly for my tastes. But they are only my tastes. I was born into a rather... average household, and while I do hate to brag about myself, I really do, it makes me feel pompous... there's no doubt that I understand more than anyone in my immediate family. It is lonely, and it's easy to come to believe that it's your lot in life to be so. Understanding can easily make you feel alone, when no one around you understands as you do. Don't let it get you down. Somewhere out there, not so far away, most likely, is someone who understands things the same way you do, or close enough to it that you can feel the kinship. When you find it, don't let it go. Don't EVER let it go, no matter what happens. It's one of the most important things we have.

Edit: Thank you, and I'm glad you have.

Well, I'm not quite sure what the question was. But I loved the poem!

So thank you ever so! I hope you're having a wonderful day.

Peace.
