I have had a hysterectomy and appendectomy and now have adhesions. I am experiencing severe constant pain. My surgeon says he thinks I have adhesions. I have had a colonoscopy and sonogram, which were both normal. What kind of surgery is usually necessary for adhesion treatment?

Two common surgical techniques used to treat abdominal adhesions are laparoscopy and laparotomy.

With laparoscopy, a doctor places a camera into your body through a small hole in the skin to confirm that adhesions exist. The adhesions then are cut and released (adhesiolysis).
In laparotomy, a doctor makes a larger incision to directly see adhesions and treat them. The technique varies depending on specific circumstances.

Surgery may be performed to separate the adhesions. This often allows normal movement of the organ and reduces the symptoms caused by the adhesion. However, the risk for more adhesions increases as the number of surgeries increases.
