There are many ways to relieve yourself of constipation. First of all, you should see a doctor because they really know whats wrong. Your constipation could be a symptom of another more serious disease. But if its just constipation, use laxatives.
High-fiber diets are good and they should help, but a last resort would be to get some laxatives. I don't know any side effects in the long term and most of them should be labeled on the package.
Most laxatives don't have many side-effects in the long term, but definitely some in the short-term.
If all fails, just call a doctor.
P.S. Some fiber foods take about 12-72 hrs to work so it takes a little patience. Laxatives of course, can do the job a lot quicker.

With a high-fibre diet, you need to take more fluids. You should also exercise as this helps with the mobility of the intestines. Laxatives and enemas (injections of fluid) artificially stimulate nerve endings in the large bowel (colon). The colon is one of the last structures in the digestive tract. By the time food arrives there, nothing is left but indigestible fibre and other non-nutritive material. Laxatives remove lots of water from the colon as well as food residue. If the person refuses to drink liquids, they risk dehydration which can lead to fainting spells and, in some cases, death.

Keep up the high fiber diet, make sure that you're not eating things that will bind you up. Drink lots of water. Also, keep active. If you're sitting for long periods of time, that won't help. In the meanwhile, take the laxative. If it still is a problem, see a doctor. If this is a persistent problem, then there are some tests that he or she should do. Depending on your age and health history, you might want a colonoscopy.

yes they are ok occasionally, but not good if used regularly. try drinking more water, try prunes, delicious and helpful, add magnesium to your diet, I like a calcium and magnesium combo. keep up the high fiber diet, just make sure to drink lots of water. finally, talk to your doctor if these don't help, maybe you will do well on zelnorm for a short time. also, try making the changes for at least a week, sometimes it takes time for your digestion to normalize. Hope you feel better!
