Samhain (sow'en) - means "the end of summer".Halloween, Celtic New Year, All hallow's Eve, All Saints' Day.. It is a Major Sabbat.. In the Southern Hemisphere,The Wheel of the Year is opposite to the Northern Hemisphere.. It is the the change from Autumn to Winter, approx May 1st.. It's the Day of the Dead and Divination.. The Goddess mourns her marriage for the duration of winter to the Dark God.. She arrives upon the earth with her faerie minions from the underworld and the veil between worlds stands open for them for the night..The Dark God takes up the rulership of winter, leading the underworld minions of the faerie realms on a wild hunt upon the earth..This is the most magickal night of the year..Exactly opposite Beltane on the Wheel of the Year.. It is Beltane's dark twin.. Samhain (pronounced - sow'en) is the Craft's New Year and the Feast of the Dead.. Death is necessary for rebirth..It is a time to honour loved ones who have passed over to the next world.. By setting a place for them at the evening meal.. It is also a time to commune with other worldly beings .. Yet, the New Year, then as today, is celebrated with chaotic noisy festivities bringing on a symbolic end of the world and a birth to a new one.. The "trick or treating" is an echo of this and of the Wild Hunt..Leave a few sweets and cakes away from your house for the spirits who walk the earth on this night when the veils are thinnest.. You may also wish to set up your Altar with a picture of relative /s and friend / s who have passed over.. Candles and inscense and some offerings, always remembering that there is no set way to do this.. If it feels good to you then it's perfect..Clap your hands or ring a bell 3 times and say "Honour and respect to the ancestors and friends from the Summerlands who are near to me on this night".. You don't have to quote that, you may say your own words, but Honour and Respect is the theme.. Love and Light.. Blessed Be.. )O(

There are two days when the veil between this world and the spirit world is at it's thinnest. One is Samhain. This is when the veil is actually the thinnest. The other is Beltane. I googled really quick and found an informative page with good basic info on all of the Sabbats. It also explains the Wheel of the Year and the difference when you're in the Southern Hemisphere. There are many other sites though that have a plethora of info. Hope this helps! Blessed Be!

The two worlds are this world and the spirit world. At several times a year (equinoxes and solstices, plus halloween, which is new year's), the veil grow thin because those are considered times of transition. Dawn, midnight, noon and sunset are also times when the veil becomes thin, though the greater the transition the thinner it becomes. So in a few days on the spring equinox, the veil will become thin.

R you reading books about Wicca? This will help you alot!
There are also many yahoo Wiccans groups out there, to learn from!
There is beginning Wicca @ yahoo groups.com
and The New_Pagan Way..(I think that is the title...but, do a search) I am on these two..to learn more...there is also mystic_Investigations as well...three wonderful groups to learn from!
also try the covenspace.com .Another interesting place...and just do a search for the right group for you...yahoo and hotmail have groups on WIcca...and probably other groups as well are out n about!
Good luck...and have fun!
(these groups can really answer some great questions!!)

oh, and go to www.witchvox.com...(there are many, many sites online..but, this one is a MAJOR source out there, for everybody learning!)

P.S. Wiccans DO NOT worship the Devil....so MANY people are misinformed! They are an earth related and very beautiful religion! Get a clue, pick up a copy(for those who sit there and put Wiccans/Pagans down!...you have to learn..and the way to learn is to read, read, read, and ask, ask, ask!!!!!! You will NOT know anything, unless you start reading,..and asking others! This is how I learned...I was afraid for a long time...and no, they don't worship Satan, either! Get yourself together..and do something about the fears...take care of them! and start educating yourself now!!!

In Wiccan cosmology, the time when "the veil between the worlds is thinnest" is traditionally Samhain (usually Oct 31st), which is our festival of the beloved dead and the time when (at least as I practice Wicca) the God "dies" and returns to the womb of the Goddess/the underworld.

EDITED TO ADD: *is once again amazed at the sheer number of Christians who apparently can't read*

Here in Australia our wheel of the year is reversed. Yes, it is Halloween (Samhain) when the veil is thinnest, but in Australia it is actually on April 30.

I don't know. hmm... sounds very familiar to harry potter and the order of the phoneix.

Well anyway, even though i am an athsiet i just want to say that why can certain people just be tolarant of other relgions anyway. Besides, wicca is older than judiasm (and very, very older than the king james bible) so one would think that the relgion that is the closet to the creation of the world would know the most about how it was made.

sorry to bother you with my irrevency

Goddess bless

You are going to hell if you worship the devil. Get a king james bible. It is the only authority when it come to God's word. There is not any other God. Read Romans 1:21-1:32, it will tell you all about worshiping nature, sex, and changing God's word. Wiccan's are devil worshipping. Is that what you want to be part of, cause it's a sure way to go to hell. "Ye must be born again."
