You can put a regular child's diaper on her, cutting out a hole for her tail, MUCH more cost effective then the doggy diapers which cost 3 times as much. Keep her inside at all times except for potty time (on a leash with you). Male dogs can smell a female in heats scent for 2-5 MILES. It will bring every intact male in your neighborhood to your door. Don't give her any "pain killers" dogs do not experience "cramps". Also unless you a planning on breeding and have experience with it GET HER SPAYED. They will not spay while she is in heat because everything is to engorged with blood, but as soon as she is done, they will do it. Good Luck

DOGS DO NOT MENSTRUATE!! THEY HAVE HEAT CYCLES!!

Completely different things. It will last 14-21 days, usually twice a year. if you spay her she will not go into heat anymore. You can get "fancy pants" for her to wear at the pet store to keep the mess under control. And male dogs will be able to smell her from 2 miles away (literally) so constant supervision when outdoors is a MUST. If a much larger male breeds her, it could be dangerous for her.

Keep her indoors and under very close supervision at all times. Never leave her outside alone, because intact male dogs will go great distances to get to a female in heat. Letting her out of your sight for even a moment could cause an unwanted, dangerous pregnancy. I'd also recommend getting a pair of doggy shorts for her so that she doesn't bleed in the house.

Other than that, I recommend getting her spayed as soon as her heat is over. The only reason she should remain intact is if she is to be bred, and if you're a professional breeder. I really recommend spaying her.

Get her fixed! :) You can also buy special diapers for her during this time, available at pet stores. It helps keep the house cleaner! Also - check out www.petsleeves.com - they have a great product that is resuable and disposable. It will help keep the diapers on her better if you decide to go that route. But, really, getting her spayed is the important thing!

Keep her indoors, when she's outdoors, make sure she's leashed or otherwise securely contained to prevent accidental pregnancy.
Unless you plan to breed her (and actually know what you are doing), take her to a vet to get her spayed.
